Still on prevacid and periactin.
Eating Strike - Week 2
Z had a little virus a little over a week ago...presented as a fever and no appetite...no vomiting, no diahrreah...just no eating and a happy hot kid. Couple days later he was eating better and I was feeling we were ont he road to recovery...a week later and when you approach him with the bottle it's like I'm feeding him battery acid...his intake is down to 13 oz a day...and it's not all willing. He's hydrating with ice cubes, water and juice, but the formula is not cutting it for him. Have any of you dealt with sudden formula refusal? I'm wondering if he's just over the taste or if this is a new terrible thing...The GI is squeezing us in tomorrow at 2. Wish me luck. I'm so sad and tired.

Tracey, mom to Katie diagnosed with GERD at 3 week.
Katie did this and they did a blood test and she had a horrible raging sinus infection!! It was so bad the lab called the doctor at home who called me at home to make sure we were giving her the abx that were prescribed.

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
I am sooo sorry you guys are going through this. Yes, we have been there. 7 days, then 9 days, then 6 days. I know how scarey and exhausting it can be. So scarey when they are already so far behind in weight. They have not extra body fat to get them by. In Ryans case his throat was fire engine red, which was thought to be from a virus. My assumption was that it was from the acid. We survived on yogurt, pudding made from formula (I can send you the recipe if you want) and runny baby foods. He still lost weight but not as much as he would have. Do you or can you use DuoCal with Zack?

I am Jacky, mommy to Joslyn Olivia (April 2008) and Katelyn Isabel (November 2009).
Joslyn was dx'ed with Silent Reflux with breath apnea at 5 days old. VERY SCARY!
Katelyn is a spitter reflux baby. Started at 3 days old as well. (Both were/are breast fed.. symptoms came on when my milk came in).
Joslyn has been reflux free since she was 12 months (suffered poor weight gain for a few months) and Katelyn is now on Zantac... waiting to see if it works.
Zack! You need to eat! If not for your momma.. then for Joslyn!!!

That pudding with formula sounds like a great idea! I have not heard of that before!

Keep us updated!

Jacky

Infant Formula Pudding 14 oz of formula (prepare this first) 1/3 cup sugar 2 TBLS Corn Starch 2 egg yolks 2 TBLS Butter 1/2 tsp vanilla Mix Sugar and Cornstarch together. Add the prepared formula and egg yolks. Wisk it well. Microwave 5 minutes on 50% power, stir well, microwave on high 2 more mintues. (You want to bring it to a boil). Blend in butter and vanilla. Pour into little containers and chill. You can also cook this on the stove instead of the microwave if you want. Just bring it to a boil.

Not bad at all. You want a source of the problem... and easily fixable source. I wish I could come give you a helping hand. Will he is infant cereal? I can Ryan a alot of that and instant mashed potatoes made with formula.

Mom to Matthew, 01/16/08, GERD baby, has been on Zantac since 2 mos. Aidan, his twin brother, no GERD. Max-ed out on Zantac at 1ml-3 times/day, and switched to Prevacid 15mg split tab 08/20/08. Switched again to 20mg Prilosec 09/18/08 due to Prevacid's restlessness/headache side effects. Reflux was out of control again and had to switch to 10mg Nexium 02/11/09. Good result so far.
Hang in there. I know it's very hard and stressful going through periods like that with your little refluxer and a lot of time you don't know what you're dealing with. Matthew was recently diagnosed with ear infection and just finished the 10 day antibiotics. His symptoms were low grade fever (~100), sudden reduced appetite, vomiting solid but he could hold down some formula. The pedi said it doesn't need a high fever in case of ear infection. When i got the diagnosis, I was so happy. Then he got a cold from his brother. He lost some weight but on the way to recovery now. I hope you'd find the answer and Jack will eat again soon. Lots of hugs!

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
This will give you hope..... the last BAD ear infection Jedd had.....he completely stopped eating all together NOTHING went down the hatch we had to tube feed him all day and all night. It is very VERY painful to swallow when a child/person has an ear infection. I would be that could cause it. Or, you need a med increase. Let us know how the appt goes.

Tracey, mom to Katie diagnosed with GERD at 3 week.
With Katie's sinus infection and her last double ear infection the only clue we saw was the not eating, so *hopefully* its something as simple as that. I agree its funny when we want it to be something easy and simple like an ear infection.

Hope things get better! What ever happened with that last diagnosis they made on Zack? I forgot the name of it, but it involved kidneys, etc. Possibly a reason why he is so small. I think you said they even started Zack on the meds for it. That is the sweetest picture of him BTW.
Check with your
doctor first!
