erythromycin info
We were put on this for Kody today. He's getting 1 ml 3 x's a day. The GI has been using this more often than the Reglan. Has anyone had any adverse reactions with this? The GI said that if he starts vomiting on it then he'll adjust the dose. I also read about the tummy aches and nausea with it. I don't want anymore tummy aches for him. Just a little nervous using it but he's hoping it will help keep things from coming up so often especially at night. Short note on the appt. I really liked this new GI. I was really nervous about it and it turned out fine. I'm continuing on my df diet and need to be on it for at least 4 more months. Yikes! Kody has continued to improve so we're crossing our fingers. He was put on zantac just because our insurance won't pay for the axid so we'll see if we'll get it down him every day. He also is trying the eryth. to help him empty his stomach. He doesn't want to make anymore changes right now. Thanks to all of you for giving me suggestions. This GI's nurse made him sound like a real jerk but he wasn't at all. He took his time with us and didn't want to yank him off of his meds. It's funny how things can get interpreted on the phone. We're crossing our fingers that this will work for him and that the df diet will continue to help him. We got a lot of good info from this doc and he specializes in mpi and motility just what Kody needs right now. Well I hear my little guy now so gotta go! Have a good night everyone!

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
I am so happy the appt. went well! Once you find the right GI you are on your way. Hope everything continues to improve.

FWIW the Axid may be worth fight for....Jedd does a world of difference between the two. We tried to save money bey going down to Zantac for a two months. the difference was astounding.

Our GI and I really can't explain WHY there was such a big difference but there was. Chemically the two meds are VERY similar but Jedd just does much MUCH better on Axid. Weird, I know, but then again, when has Jedd every been NOT weird when it comes to GERD.....LOL

I have read that sometimes Axid can have the side affect to make the tummy empty faster in *some* kiddos. Jedd must be one of those kiddos.

As far as E-mycin. Jedd used it for a very long time with success. So I'd use it in a heartbeat. You can also give a probiotic every day to counteract the ABX affect of killing off ALL the good and bad bacteria in the gut. Although, with Jedd he did not take one at the time, he does now.

We sure are hoping that this all works. Jedds mommy- thanks for the info on axid. He was doing really well on it so I hated changing it like that but it's so expensive to keep it filled for us. Hopefully zantac will work just as well if not we definitely will go back to axid. I didn't know about axid emptying the stomach better. It's good to hear that Jedd did so well on it. We're hoping for the same success. Today Kody is being a handful. He's being really stubborn about his morning nap which is unlike him. What a stinker he can be. My hubby said he changed a diaper this morning that had been poopy and it overfilled the diaper onto his clothes. Sorry about the mental pic. Do you think that's the eryth. working already? We only gave him one dose last night because we got home in the evening. I don't know but he's not done that before. However, today he's hiccupping and refluxing more but seems happy enough. Well I'm hoping he goes down for a nap now because he's fussing.

How old is Kody??? And what's a weight?? That will give me some idea as to the dose compared to what Jedd took.

Jedd's lowest dose was 1cc 5x's a day. that was when he was TINY. About 3-4 months old and well under 12lbs. I know that for sure because he was 12lbs at 6 months old for heart surgery. that was the minimum weight.

When was the last dose given before the blow out diaper???

Jedd had lots of blow out diapers when he was on the dose above because of how tiny he was. That dose is pretty high for that age/weight.....LOL

I hope he napped for you. Mine's down right now. quiet 2 hours here we come!!! LOL

Kody is 5 mos old and weighs 15lbs7oz. He's currently on 1ml 3 x's a day of the eryth. He got a dose around 8 last night and then around 8:30 this morning he had his blowout. Then he had another poop at around 10. Did Jedd get any tummy aches from it? I think it's giving Kody some. I'm not sure if I like this or not. He's been a little fussier today and his stomach has been making noises. Do you think that I should give it more time? I haven't given him his second dose today yet because it seems to be making him uncomfortable after I give it to him. The GI said to call him if he's throwing up and then they would change the dose so he hasn't been throwing anything up. What do you think? Any help

It could be too high of a dose. We saw blowouts within about 30 mins of giving it to Jedd. He really didn't act extra cranky. Considering he was pretty in a non stop state of crankiness....LOL We could tell it was bothering him some though, he would pull his legs up to his tummy shortly after being given it.

You could always cut the dose down yourself and see if you can still reap the benefits with out having the side affects KWIM

I only gave him 2 doses yesterday because he just gets so irritable on it. He didn't sleep very well either last night. But when he woke up he had a big poo. He's a pretty regular baby anyway. I just can't handle the crankiness. Do you think that giving it to him less would be good or lowering the dose? I know that you have to have it in their system consistently to reap the benefits so I'm trying to figure out how to help him feel better with it. I think that it is definitely helping though. He's less congested and doesn't cough as much but go figure he has to be a crankbut on it. lol Thanks for all your help on this.

You're welcome.

We gave Jedd his doses 5x's per day. Once 30min prior to any meals and once in the middle of the night while on tube feeding while sleeping.

I would think you'd want to follow that same type of pattern as the med is meant to be taken before a meal to get things moving.

So, maybe cut the dose my a third or a fourth and still give it on the same schedule. That would keep a steady flow of the drug in the system.

Thanks! I gave him his first dose this morning already and his tummy hurt again but I gave him some mylanta and he settled down. I'm going to try to give him a little less this afternoon to see how it goes. I want it to keep working for him because he's not coughing and choking as much so it's probably doing its job. Less juicy burps as well which is a good thing. We haven't gotten 3 doses down him yet because he's so uncomfortable when we give it to him. We'll see how it goes!
