vigilantmom -- Chinese Medicine
You asked in my recent thread about how one finds a Chinese Medicine Practitioner and what they do differently. In my town, they are quite common, and are increasingly available elsewhere. Most practitioners of acupuncture are also practitioners of Chinese Medicine, though not all are well versed in pediatrics. I was fortunate enough to be referred to a woman who specializes in pediatrics, and has small children of her own. She was absolutely wonderful with Lorenzo.

Chinese Medicine is based on a different understanding of the body and the energy of our bodies and spirits than Western Medicine. It typically takes a much more holistic approach to health, with concern for the physical body as well as the emotional/spiritual, believing that the two are inextricably connected. So a good practitioner is not only knowledgeable about the use of herbal remedies, massage, the energy movement (energy fields) of the body and acupuncture, but also demonstrates an interest in the person as a whole being -- physical and emotional, present and past.

With children, most practitioners do not use acupuncture needles, at least initially. Depending on the circumstances they will usually use a combination of body work (similar in appearance to massage, but different in scope and application) and herbal compounds. For Lorenzo's first treatment, this practitioner used only body work -- rubbing his back in a specific style and rubbing particular areas of his arms and legs.

We have been to several practitioners, and while all were okay, no one before was ever able to effect such a dramatic outcome. It can be a bit of a challenge to find a practitioner you feel really good about, especially if there aren't many to choose from, but when you find one who really knows his/her stuff and connects well with their patients -- they are worth their weight in gold. I'm happy to answer specific questions, if you have any. We've been really happy with using a combination of Western Medicine (primarily for diagnosis), Chinese Medicine, Homeopathy and Craniosacral Therapy. But we are also fortunate to live in a place where all of those services are readily available from well qualified practitioners.

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
Thanks so much for the information. I am going to see who I can find here. I will start by calling the accupunture clinic to see if they have someone they can recommend. Never hurts to ask. It sounds very intriguing.

Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
I have used accupuncture for myself while I was pregnant and some still. I love it. I haven't found anyone in town who does children. I do take my girls to the chiropractor and have seen some good results with the oldest. I have talked to some others that I know have had some results with a doc in MO but we haven't contacted them yet. According to the people that go to him have seen great results. I will let you know when and if we go what I think. Where are you located?

The method that I was told about from some people I grew up with is called N.A.E.T. I can't remember what the N stands for but it is the doctors first name and then Allergy Elimination Treatments. I have suffered from allergies, asthma, and an immune deficiency my whole life and nothing has brought total relief. I am ready to try this and with all of A's confirmed allergens, if it works she will be next. There are some new studies on cold laser therapy out there and I am looking into that for my sinuses and my oldest dd's ears. I have heard good things. I will let you know what I find out and if it works. I am willing to try anything at this point.
