Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Anyone use Digestive Enzymes plus update
Wondering if anyone here uses digestive enzymes with your refluxers. A friend of mine recommended it. She is an adult with refux and she stated that when she started a PPI her digestion really slowed down due to the decrease in the acid. Left her feeling full and bloated all the time. Said the digestive enzymes were great for her. Ryan is only 11 months old. I am leary to go down that path. PS. His scope and upper GI was last Tuesday. No structural abnormalities. Acid was much higher in his throat than they thought it would be so the doc has agreed to upping his dosage to 30 mg a day. He said to start with giving it all in the morning and if that doesnt work then split is 15 in the morning and 15 at night. I thought that kids metabolize prevacid really quick so it doesnt make sense to me to do all 30 in the morning. I have been splitting it. Thoughts?

many kids, so many so (marcikids has studies even a few other places on the web) that it is thought it is best to split doses. However, this did not work for emily. who knows the exact reason, but her reflux became worse when we split. we found the morning dose was easier. personally i think it has to do with the fact she had DGE. the evening dose was probably never given on an empty stomach, so it never really worked. this is just thought though.

go through old posts on this site in the search mode "probiotics" and you will find a lot of kids either are on or were on probiotics. we never had any luck to tell you the truth but we were just doing culturelle. we did it for 2 months before i stopped "wasting" money. A lot of probiotics take 2+ weeks to work. from what i read there are a lot of different types of probiotics I was doing some research on IBD and found a study on probiotics that was done and they listed 2 types and found only one seemed like it worked. i'll have to look it up again to get the exact name.

if he can tolerate yogurt that's another good source too. but if he can't, a lot of probiotics have milk in them i think when you do your search you will find references to milk free ones

I never thought about the DGE part. Humm... You might be on to something. So how did you know you were dealing with DGE?? Would that have shown on the Upper GI he had done last Tuesday? He does not have any allergies that we know of. Ryan is different kind of refluxer. Happy as a lark all the time. Sleeps like a rock. Our issue is that he is always hoarse and gets recurrent nasty sore throats with cancer sores so he goes days on end with out drinking (7 to 9 days). I think now we are dealing with a fluid adversion if that is possible. I am sure it is from having to dump fluids down his throat with a medicine syringe so many days in Jan and March. Now he will only drink if he is half asleep. Many times he will only dring 2 oz in the morning and then I have to dump the other 4 oz into oatmeal cereal and feed it to him that way. That has to make him feel so full but I dont know how else to get the fluids in him.

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
We are on 15 mg of Prevacid a day adn we dosed in the morning for months, we tried splitting for a while, but it made no difference so I stopped...a couple months ago Z stopped taking the med int he morning...spit it everywhere...and then the half hour wait to eat?? It stunk, so we started dosing him at 3pm...he barely eats at daycare, so it is a nice empty tummy. It seems to be working OK. We started probiotics and digestive enzymes a couple weeks ago...and I am not a "crunchy" hippy mom..I'm a desperate mom...My son was on reglan and erythro with on help for his DGE (ohhhh and he has it for SURE)...I have to say that I think it's really helping..the vomiting has decreased SIGNIFICANTLY (he's a huge puker)...he has had good weeks before, but he really seems to be more comfortable...the puke that does come up is pretty immediate...not three hours later...I don;t know...but I have to say I thinkthey are helping! email me is you want to know the brands and websites where I got them...I'll give you my dosing info, too (it was kind of trial and error) rattgrrrl@yahoo.com

My son is on 30 mg and we split it in two doses. 15 am and 15 pm. He refluxed 202 times on his probe all night and day and we just found out his sleep study showed apnea. The split dose works well. My son has DGE as well so it is hard to make sure it is on an empty stomach. My son was slow to empty on his upper GI. Was placed on motility drugs and did quite well. We then had a gastric emptying scan, which is the test for DGE, which showed it, but these tests are unreliable. His probe was done off motility drugs so I think that is why he refluxed so much. His stomach is constantly full. So I would trial and error. I know some kids do better on the 1 dose but for us we had to split it. My son is still young though, 5 1/2 months old, and I think that is why the doc told us to split it. When he was on just 15 mg I found it best to give it in the morning however he was having severe acid breakthrough on that dose so we just threw in another one at night.

emily had a UGI and a small bowel follow through. the UGI was basically normal and had 1 small reflux episode. The small bowel follow through took forrrrreeevvveerr b/c her emptying from her stomach to her small intestines was so slow. She had inflammation throughout her small intestine so they weren't sure if that had to do with the slow emptying or not. But The GI said the pre-test x-ray showed unidentified matter in her stomach (the test is done on empty system) he said the radiologist said it was more then likely food and the test was almost canceled b/c of it. i swore up and down i didn't feed her and begged them to do the test and they did. The last time i fed her was oatmeal cereal was the afternoon the day prior to the test. They suspected DGE b/c of the matter in the stomach and slow emptying (the test took 6 hours!) and celiacs b/c small bowel inflammation. because the test took 6 hours we had plenty of xrays showing very high and numerous reflux episodes.

oh and i'm sorry i wrote about probiotics i don't know what i was thinking! i meant digestive enzymes, which are different then probiotics but can be used in conjunction. there was a couple posts about digestive enzymes you can search too. we have never tried them b/c emily's system is so sensitive and really we don't have to money to waste on it. i am not a hippey mom either lol and really am quite against a lot of natural remedies but my MIL who has IBD tried digestive enzymes (a purple bottle from walmart) and said they work very very very well for her to calm diarrhea and bloating. she still watches her diet very very carefully and it really hasn't helped her acid reflux though.
