Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
Renal Tubular Acidosis
Anyone? anyone? Zack may have this...we are going to start meds this week...it may explain his pathetic growth. He's finally gained some weight, but height hasn't changed...I need to do some research!

There is lots of info online. I don't know anyone who has this. It looks like it is highly treatable with meds.It says it is diagnosed by checking acid in blood and urine. If acid in blood is higher than what it should be and acid in urine is lower than what it should be this could be the cause. It also says though that further testing is needed to rule out other things. Then they will have to check sodium, potassium, and chloride levels to help determine what type you have. Depending on what type you have, treatment meds may differ. It uses the character "Tiny Tim" in " aChristmas Carol" as an example of RTA child. That's interesting. How did they come across this possible diagnosis? I know you've struggled with weight issues so I'm curious what made them check this. Good luck with your research and the new meds!

Basically I kicked MOM ass and got a few lbs on him, but his height hasn't changed in months...the doc was intrigued by him, so she took his labs home with her and studied them more thoroughly. She then consulted a nephrologist at Childrens and he thinks that it's RTA. We are going to start the meds and redo the labs in a week or so to see if the acid levels regulate. If so that's the problem. He's had a slew of other testing and abdom. u/s so most likely it would be the childhood transient form that the kid eventually outgrows...we can only hope...We spent so much time working on the reflux and HUGE vomiting issues that we neglected looking elsewhere...Baby bait and switch. RTA can cause vomiting and all sorts of other things that Z is dealing with including poor appetite. Wouldn't it be nice to have a simple answer?? Don't worry...my hopes aren't up...we've tried every med known to man!! lol (my fingers are crossed, though)

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
I sure hope that you get an answer soon.((HUGS))
