allergic to prevacid? ?'s about solids
OK- so I split johnnies dose of compounded prevacid (1/2 in am and 1/2 in pm). It helped considerably with the skin scratching and hair pulling screaming fits- he still would a little but way better. So after a few days of doing this I gave him his evening dose and he broke out in hives all over his face and neck about 10 minutes after. Nothing else was given. I have been afraid to give him anymore since so we are just doing the zantac for now. Should I try it again just to make sure its really an allergic reaction or could it be something in the compounding? Any thoughts? So he is almost 10 months and is finally getting a few teeth. When should I start giving him real foods. It seems like I always gave my kids cheerios etc when they got their teeth- I have tried cheerios with him but he gags and vomits.

Sara, Mom to Isobel 10/01/08 Dx Silent reflux @ 6 wks. Prevacid 22.5mg split in 2 doses. Pepcid .5ml twice a day. Diagnostically confirmed milk protein, egg and cat allergy. Suspected corn, pea and squash allergy. Trialed Alimentum and Elecare without success, currently on Isomil Advance RTF with moderate success. Barium Swallow and UGI 3/08 Pondering a ph probe and endoscopy.
Sorry I can't help much with this, the only thing I can think is that compounding pharmacies do have different bases they work with. Is it possible to call the pharmacy and find out the ingredients in the base they used on his meds? Maybe there's an allergen in that?

Traffic on the site is light on the weekends, hang in there momma - I'm sure someone has some better suggestions.

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
I am so sorry that he has broken out in hives. Sure sounds like he has had an allergic reaction to either the prevacid or something in the compounding.

Good idea to stop. Maybe prevacid isn't the medicine for him. DOes your insurance cover any of the other PPIs like prilosec or nexium?

I would call your ped ASAP to see if you can try another PPI. I wouldn't wait for the GI appt. because it is too far away.

Keep giving him the Mylanta/Maalox too.

Personally, I would give any solids until you get the reflux under control.

we already tried prilosec but I couldnt get it down him without him projectile vomiting everywhere. We haven't tried nexium yet though. I have a feeling that ped is just going to say keep on the zantac until the gi appointment but I will try because he is definitely arching his back and having a hard time since we stopped. I am also wondering if any of your kids was considered developementally delayed. He is a foster baby and while he is a little behind on his milestones I thought that is to be expected considering he can't lay down at all (aspirates constantly)! His caseworker is concerned because he cant crawl yet- but I'm not sure how he can learn if he can never lay down. He is trying to walk while holding your fingers so Im not real concerned but he has always been a little behind in everything (like he didn't learn to sit without support until he was almost 7 months).

I don't have any experience in the area of developmental delays but a lot of moms on here have a great deal of experience with theis and their reflux kids. I would start a new topic with that and I am sure once the week starts you will get a lot of help in that area.

I am sorry that you are struggling with him right now.

Did you give the meds with a syringe. I used to just shoot the Zantac in Katie's cheek and then stick a bottle in her mouth.

Keep asking lots of questions on this site. There are some incredibly amazing moms on here who will get you through this I promise.

Not only can you ask a million questions but you can also vent in a non judging environment. ((HUGS))

I would ditto what has been said already. Has he had any reactions before on prevacid? Was it a new compound from the pharmacy? It's hard waiting for the doctors to help out. Just keep going day by day or even hour by hour. I get on here a lot with questions and when I need much needed support. I know right now my son's reflux is still not under control and we have to put off any kinds of solids. Also, my daughter who's 9 now had reflux and hirschsprungs disease and didn't start crawling until 9 months and didn't walk until 15 months. She was late on a lot of things but is just fine. She started crawling and reaching milestones after she had surgery and was doing better. So when you get his reflux under control maybe everything will fall into place. Do you have any kind of physical therapists that could help you? We have something called first steps here that help babies and toddlers reach their milestones and development. Hang in there! I hope that things start getting better soon.

Sorry, I'm not sure if I got the background on your son. Did you rule out milk/soy allergy? What formula is he on? Hives are a bad sign I wouldn't give the Prevacid to him again. Was it the solutabs? I'm pretty sure they contain milk. But, it could be the medicine itself. Choking, gagging, arching, vomiting can all be signs of reflux, but also of allergies. Keep your eyes open for both. We followed a reflux dx for a year & a half, when actually allergies were the bigger culprit. El
