Carafate - before/after meal ?
Hi, The ped has prescribed carafate to use on the bad days. How do you ladies usually give carafate? before / after meals. If it is before is there a restriction like prevacid that you should give 20-30 mins before ?

Sara, Mom to Isobel 10/01/08 Dx Silent reflux @ 6 wks. Prevacid 22.5mg split in 2 doses. Pepcid .5ml twice a day. Diagnostically confirmed milk protein, egg and cat allergy. Suspected corn, pea and squash allergy. Trialed Alimentum and Elecare without success, currently on Isomil Advance RTF with moderate success. Barium Swallow and UGI 3/08 Pondering a ph probe and endoscopy.
The drug package insert reads empty stomach which pretty much equates to half hour before and two hours after a meal. I know I've given it outside those time restrictions. Carafate 'activates' in the presence on acid to bind to an irritated area- just something to keep in mind when dosing. Your pharmacist can help you set up a dosing schedule that suits your child's needs. HTH

Strong, Beautiful, daughter who is thriving beyond imagination and a healthy, happy 3 year old.
Meggy's script says 2 hours after any meal and 1 hour before. So, there needs to be a total of 3 hours without eating or drinking. So, we usually encourage her to eat or drink something, then from the time she finishes start the timer for 2 hours. At the 2 hour mark, we give her carafate. After that, we wait another hour before she eats or drinks.

I know it is hard to wait in between, especially when a child is screaming "I hungy, I thirsy", but because of her slow motility, we discovered if we don't wait that amount of time, it is useless.
