anyone tried florastor probiotic?
We're currently trying this to see if it will help my lo with his runny stool and reflux. So far it hasn't made a bit of diff. Just wondering if anyone has used it or had good results with probiotics helping with runny stool or reflux?

Kathryn, Pager Volunteer and mommy to Emily Mia 02/04/07. 3 years old with GERD. 30mg Prevacid and Pepcid AC. Mylanta needed for flares. Failed prilosec med switch. Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
ah! that's the probiotic the GI suggested for emily, i couldn't remember it for the life of me. i looked up and down the shelves of a couple stores but couldn't find it. He said it was supposed to help restore the flora so she might stop getting frequent reoccurring diarrhea.

that's disappointing that it's not working have you been doing it for over 2 weeks? i know a lot of probiotics take a while to kick in and establish. we tried culturelle and for as expensive as it was it did nothing.

We had to ask our pharm for it and they actually had to order it for us. The gi said at first to try culturelle and we had been trying florstor anyway so that was fine. We haven't been to consistent on it since I bf so its hard to find a time to pump a little to give it to him. I didn't realize it took a few weeks tp kick in. I don't know how expensive culturelle is but we pay around 12 for 10 packets. I think thats expensive. I was just about to email you to see how Audrey was doing. Did they find anything out. Email me sometime and let me know. Good luck with the florastor. BTW its tutti frutti flavor.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
That is very expensive actually - I hope it works though. Just like meds, the body needs to figure out what to do so it takes a week or 2. You may even see the stools get worse for a few days until the bacteria evens itself out

I talked to our pharm today to get more florastor and she said that culturelle is better but the downside is you can't put it in liquids like a bottle. So the culturelle is cheaper but we can't go on it yet until he's eating solids which is a no go as of right now. I guess I'm paying for convenience.

My kids don't have diarrhea associated with their reflux (**knock wood**), but I myself did for 19 years before they figured out what was causing it :( For me, the Protonix controls the diarrhea 100%. No probiotic ever made a dent in it, and I was drinking like a quart of Kefir a day in desperation at one point. I've tried a lot of probiotic suppliments too...no dice for me anyways. I wonder if your child needs a different reflux drug or a different dose? For me, once my reflux was under control my diarrhea was gone. If I miss so much as one pill, though, I'm cramping and having diarrhea the next day.

momtomaia, that's what my ped said about his mucous in his stool and sure enough when we got put on a higher dose of meds it went away. I always find out new info on here. I don't think he's on the right med yet and we've been trying this probbiotic and all these diets for me and nothing has helped. I'm going to give this axid a little longer and then see what happens if he's not getting any better then we'll be calling he gi for some relief. Thanks for the experience with your reflux. It makes me feel less crazy because I thought his stoolong was a coorelation with his reflux.

I can tell you anecdotally that things like Zantac (Axid is in the same drug class I think??) actually GIVE me diarrhea if I'm not also taking my Protonix at the same time. I don't know if it's really common for reflux to cause diarrhea, but for some reason my Dr. wasn't surprised that it was the culprit for me. It seemed to me like he'd seen it happen before. It really sounds like your son is on the wrong drug or the wrong dose or both.
