screaming fits
Help- my 9 month old has started having these hour long SCREAMING fits every day. It seems like its at a different time every day but always during the day - never at night when he's been sleeping. He is in pain its obvious but I dont know if its his reflux or his ears or his head. He claws his head and pulls out gobs of hair. He is on amox for an ear infection but he's almost done with it. He started prevacid this week but the fits started before he started the medicine. Has anyone else experienced this. He is generally a really happy baby but nothing I do comforts him- and then its gone as quickly as it started. He also is developing a strange rash on the backs of both legs?

Kathryn, Pager Volunteer and mommy to Emily Mia 02/04/07. 3 years old with GERD. 30mg Prevacid and Pepcid AC. Mylanta needed for flares. Failed prilosec med switch. Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
take a picture of the rash and show it to the pedi, it could be eczema or it could be an allergy. rashes are just so vague and hard to pin-point the cause sometimes just by description.

sometimes ear infections are viral and don't respond to antibiotics you might want to consider getting him in for a recheck.

i will say however that when emily's silent reflux was bad when she was that old she would claw at her face scratch at her ear and pull her hair too. it was in episodes just as you described. she would be sitting there playing then all the sudden she was a screaming mess. I learned to give her mylanta when that happened and she was a lot better. she was fine at night- for the most part. I was not nearly as up and down with her as i am with my 10 month old NON-refluxer lol.

prevacid can take up to 2 weeks to actually kick in but when it does i hope it will make these episodes disappear!

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
Hi! Mags had one ear inf after another and it was impossible to tell if the problem was lack of sleep? teeth? ears? reflux? I made so many trips to the ped :) I funded his kids' college :) Hopefully it's just that the prevacid hasn't fully kicked in yet. I think I would take him in for an ear recheck. Amox does basically nothing for my girls and others that I know. He may need a stronger antibiotic to clear it up. Ask about the ear drops for pain if it's his ears. They helped Mags a lot.

I'd take him in too, jmho. I would want them to check out the rash and recheck the ears. There is a lot of crazy stuff going around right now. I am so sorry he is in pain. Is he cutting teeth?? Have they told you whether you can try tylenol or motrin? I do know that prevacid gave me a headache when I first started taking it but it went away after a week or so on it. They were bad headaches though so maybe he is having headaches? I don't know, just a thought.

How much mylanta would you give your kids at this age? And is it regular mylanta or a pediatric one- I looked yesterday for a pediatric version and couldnt find it. I have heard lots of people say it really helps- so im wanting to give it a try. I will take him back to the doctor- we are there every week anyways! To me it looks like his head hurts but mine would too if I pulled out all of my hair. LOL Sorry I have to try to find some humor in all of this! Thanks

Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
It is regular maalox or mylanta that you will use. I would call your pharmacist and get a dosage from them. Just give them the age and weight and they will be able to give you some good advice. I am sorry he is feeling so crummy and we dealt with over 13 ear infections before my oldest was 9 months old. They aren't fun and especially not fun with reflux on top of it. I think you are smart for taking him back in and I understand about taking him in every week. We haven't missed many weeks in almost two years. I will second what the pp said about the antibx not working or causing the rash.

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
It is so hard when they can't tell you what is wrong. Hope your ped can help.
Check with your
doctor first!
