probe updateWe just got back from Cincinnatti Children's from Holden's impedance probe and swallow study. He didn't aspirate on the swallow but he has major coordination issues with getting food and formula to the back of his throat to swallow. We need lots of speech therapy. Thank goodness we are in early intervention. On to the probe-He did great!! They put it in very quickly. They have one guy that inserts them and reads them. We didn't even have to use the arm boards as long as we were watching him he didn't even know it was there. When he slept we put them on. Well at 3:45 AM I heard him scream and I looked over and he had pulled the probe out!! Well within 1 hour we had it reinserted had an x-ray to make sure it was in the right place and were back asleep. It was very easy and am excited to find out the results. He is five months old and is on 30 mg of prevacid. They did it on meds to see if he was still having any breakthrough acid since we are still having some problems even on such a high dose. I bet he does as i can tell that at times his spit up smells like pure acid where at times it smells like formula. He also still doesn't like to eat his bottles. Well we'll find out soon. The impedance measures nonacidic and acidic reflux. It also had a button that i would push for a symptom, cough, or regurgitation. Then I would have to write down the time and symptom in a diary. They will compare the diary to the info from the probe. For example-If he coughed at 5:45 they will check to see if he refluxed at that time and if so he may have been aspirating. At 4:45 if he gagged, they will check the probe to see if he reflexed at that time. If he did, he gagged from reflux, if he didn't he gagged from oral motor skills. Hopefully we will get some good info and see if our meds need to be adjusted. I would recommend the probe to anyone. It was very easy, tiring being in the hospital but easy. We will finish our workup next week for Holden. Also they started him on Erythromicin for his emptying. His scan showed mild delay although I think it is worse than that b/c he was starved to death before the test. Thanks ladies for your support.
