Kody had a GI appt finallyWe had our GI appt. yesterday morning. We had a very long day yesterday but we got some things done. We had the nurse practitioner that won't be there after this week which was frustrating but at least we got in and set up with the actual GI doctor in about a month.
We had the upper GI done which showed that anatomically everything was ok but it did show him refluxing. But the stuff only went part way up the esophagus not all the way. That's what I was told. I wasn't able to go into the room because he wouldn't have taken the bottle if he saw me so I sat in the lobby with my daughter. That was super hard for me. They decided to try axid again since he started out doing well with that. It was being underdosed so she upped to 2.2 ml twice a day instead of the .9 twice a day. I'm not to confident about this working though but the prilosec stopped working and the prevacid solutabs made him super irritable. I was pushing for zantac but she wanted to try this first. But he's been unbearable today. He's been eating a lot so that's making everything worse as well so I can't tell if he's comfort feeding or really hungry.
They also said that if he's not better in about 2 weeks then they want to do a gastric emptying test. We aren't sure that we need that since the doctor that read the Upper GI said the stomach was emptying fine. They discussed possibly doing reglan too but I was very hesitant to try that if he needed it.
Does that test sound like it would be necessary for us to do? Has anyone had experience with that test if the upper gi showed that the stomach was emptying ok? Maybe I'm not sure I know what this test actually will show.
Well his symptoms have been really bad today. Has anyone had experience with the barium causing a bad flare up with reflux? I hope that the axid starts kicking in soon too because I'm totally at my breaking point. Well I'm going to hopefully get some time to myself to regroup since my lo decided to finally fall asleep. I know that I had other questions for everyone but my brain is totally fried right now. Thanks everyone for being there when I needed someone to cry to and support.

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
|Mags had a problem with the barium. It constipated her badly. Has he pooped? He should poop out white stuff. When they did an xray taking out her pH probe (after the upper GI) she still had the barium in her tummy and one of the girls told me it can harden in their tummy after a day or so. If he gets constipated, it will def. flare his reflux. I wouldn't be surprised if it's why he's having a rough time today. Poor lil fella. |
If he hasn't pooped out the barium, call the GI office and ask what you can do to hurry it along. I gave Mags juice but he's older than she was, he might can have something stronger.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
|I agree with maggiemom - the barium can constipate, and constipation can flare reflux. If needed, you can do a Babylax to get the stuff out. I'm surprised the docs don't want to do Zantac - it's usually the first one they try. The gastric emptying - my dd's emptying seemed fine in the upper GI and the scope, but turned out to be delayed. Remember that for those tests they're running on empty, so I don't know why they even try to dx DGE on those. |

|Just wanted to ditto that the UGI is not a very good predictor of emptying ability. My sons emptying always looks fine by UGI but it was horrible on his Gastric Emptying Scan. The UGI is such a short moment in time and DGE is worse as the days goes on and the food builds up. I am glad you got an appt for a month so you can continue figuring out something that works for him. ||Check with your
