Marci-Kids
Is anyone here using the Marci-Kids dosing schedule for Prevacid? Have you found it more effective than the standard dose? How did you approach/convince your doctors to use it?

AND

I'm thinking of taking Isobel to Miami Childrens Hospital for a workup. Anyone have any experience there? Are there other/better hospitals in Florida you would recommend? Specific doctors you have had good success with?

All information is good information. Thanks.

Hey! My five month old is on a Marci Kids dose of prevacid 30 mg split AM and PM. I didn't have to convince my doctor, we use a GI at Cincinnati Children's. We just worked up to that. He started at 7.5 a couple of weeks not working then up to 15 mg wait about 6 weeks not working, etc. I was concerned about it being such a high dose and had not read Marci kids research at the time, but he assured me that if the current dose he was on was not working that it was fine. Basically, he told me the same info that Marci says. It has worked great for us. Now my son is currently undergoing a complete workup at Cincy b/c it hasn't solved all our prob. He now doesn't cry on his bottles. He is NEVER hungry which was the case before the prevacid as well. They think he has DGE and we're waiting probe and scopes along with some swallow studies as he gags, chokes. All that said not all kids need a Marci kids dose but if the 15 mg she's on now isn't working she could def. go up. A lot of moms on infantreflux.org have kids on Marci doses and they said they actually printed off the research and took it to their doctor along with the fact that their current dose wasn't working. I don't know anything about hospitals in Florida. We live in Kentucky, but I can tell you that we are also in the process of a complete workup. Best of luck!

Kathryn, Pager Volunteer and mommy to Emily Mia 02/04/07. 3 years old with GERD. 30mg Prevacid and Pepcid AC. Mylanta needed for flares. Failed prilosec med switch. Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
we used All Children's hospital in St. Petersburg Fl. for a long time until for some reason our GI switched his main hospital to St Joseph's Children's in Tampa. I really like All Children's and the staff was very nice.

We have only be to SJCH for out patient procedures and the staff is nice but they mix a lot of the facilities with Adults- although they do have kid sized equipment and kid friendly staff i didn't like we were sharing the same space with adult germs- kwim? okay i know that sounds stupid but all childrens was just kids.

I am not really willing to tell specific drs b/c we have only had one dr and until recently he was really great (still is) but his staff of nurses is horrible, i would never want to recommend them to anyone based upon my treatment from them. our office however is www.tummydoctos.com

i never followed the marci kids schedual for emily. she did much worse with the 2-3 times a day dosing. so we only did it once a day in the morning. she had more trouble with food and day and less trouble at night so it worked for us. but for a lot of kids the broken up schedual works well.

Tracey, mom to Katie diagnosed with GERD at 3 week.
Marci kids has our dd on way too high of a dose and we had to drop her back down from even 15 mgs. That being said she has MANY food issues and I would look at that avenue before meds are changed, JMO.

Yeah, Isobel has lots of allergies too, but I can't find a corn free, milk free and soy free formula. The child refluxes solids so.... That's part of why we're going for a workup.

emily refluxed solids- i would definitely ask for an endoscopy it really helped in the way her treatment was managed. If your child is refluxing solids (which emily was too) i would not turn down this test. not to scare you- but something to definitely keep in mind.

as far as corn/soy/milk free formula another mom on here gives her dd ultracare. I do not know anything other then that it is corn/milk/soy free. it might be worth looking into.

Toddler Health makes a corn, soy milk free one but it has little calories in it since it is made for Toddlers. Ultracare states that it is high in Vit. A and not to give to infants. Alimentum RTF is corn and *milk* free but does have soy oil in it so depending on her severity of a reaction it might be worth looking at. Katie still refluxes up solids at 18 months.

Alimentum=instant blood in the stool - even the ready to feed. I looked at the toddler health and it has so many foods in it I'm afraid to trigger unknown allergies. What I need is elecare RTF!!!! Why aren't they making that?!? We might be going for a ph probe and endoscopy next week if this med increase doesn't show improvement by Monday. I really hope the higher dose of prevacid works.
