Alimentum
I'm about to start my daughter on Alimentum after she's been on a soy based formula for 3 months now. I've heard that Alimentum tastes worse than most formulas. True? Anyone have any good or bad results with trying this formula?

OMGosh Alimentum is like vomit from a can. Sorry but it's really really really BAD!!! It stinks and taste just as bad as it smells. It ranks right up there in nastiness with Pregestimil and plain Elecare. YUCK!!!! It really is that gross. It will about make ya puke just mixing it up for bottles.

It is however, a really good formula. BUT, why are they wanting you to switch??? Some kids don't tolerate it depending on what allergies they have.

My daughter was on soy. We put her on it b/c she screamed when she had milk based formula. Her reflux just doesn't seem to be getting any better and I've heard so much about Alimentum being liquid gold. Really discouraging to hear it tastes awful. Makes sense b/c she just refused to eat it. We can only get her to take about 12 oz a day of her old formula so I'm thinking the Alimentum will be a no go. ugh

The alimentum would be worse for her intake because of the taste. But if she is taking her soy just fine, I would be inclinded to stay on it. The only reason I would switch would be if the chidl is NOT tolerating the current formula. Besides, Alimentum cost a huge fortune!!! It's really expensive. And there is not a garuntee that she will not break out from it due to MSPI.

Alimentum is made along the same machine lines as the other formulas. They do clean the lines in between production but, some of the other formulas can get stuck in the nooks and crannies. KWIM Even trace amounts can cause kids to react.

If the MSPI is really that bad AND she is NOT tolerating the Soy formula then you can go to Elecare, which taste just as bad but it is made in it's own factory on it's own lines.

but really, if there is no issue with the current formula, then I'd stay on it.

12oz in a day is really low. :( What are her percentiles looking like from birth until now???

she has stayed on her curve from months 3-5 (50% percentile). before that she was more like 80th - was born at 9 lbs 2 oz and is now 15 lbs 6 oz.

Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
I would agree with Jessica. I would probably stay on current formula unless you have a lot of vomit or just downright refusal. When Adriane was progressing through formulas we went from the soy to the Nutramigen. It is mroe expensive than the soy but not as expensive as some of the others and many los on here have had good results with it. It wasn't the answer for us but Adriane's problems are allergies and digestion. Just something else to look at.

We call most formula over $25 per can liquid gold. Then we got the platinum with the neocate. I don't think the one she is on now can be described in monetary value.

I would just watch and see how it goes for a bit in regards to weight. Switching to another formula will not cause weight to gain unless the child was having averse issues with the prior formula. KWIM. That's not too bad of a percentile but off course it should be watched since prior weights have been better.

Do you keep a log of food intake?? How much can she take in a 24 hour period??? Is she vomiting alot and that is causing low weight gains???

I tried the Alimentum and she hated it and wouldn't take any at all. We're meeting with the nurse practitioner at the GI's office today and I'm hoping they will help us with a game plan. I do keep a daily log. She takes on average 14 oz a day and has 3-4 meals of 1-2 tblspoons of cereal and a container of baby food. She doesn't vomit very much, maybe twice a week.

Does she act really fussy when you feed her like she's not hungry??? Just trying to see if she is having an aversion to eating or is maybe her tummy is emptying too slow so she is truly NOT hungry.

I really can't say I blame her for NOT wanting the alimentum it is some nasty stuffy really. Did you smell it??? I taught a child who as a baby drank it orally for 2 years!!!! Without a complaint!!! They say if you start off with it from day one, the child will accept it, after that it's really hard to get them to drink it.

Katie took it and she went from breastmilk which is sweet to it without any problems taste wise.

Hope the meeting with the nurse practitionerwent well. I wouldn't get yourself too psyched out about the taste until you really give a good try. Our son drinks plain Elecare and he is five...he begs for it every day...and he didn't start until he was over a year old. Our daughter never flinched when we switched all her formulas around...sometimes the worry is worse than actually doing it. Try not too get too discouraged by other people's experiences with it. There are lots of ways to work around it too...maybe start off mixing the two formulas and gradually increase the Alimentum day by day. Good luck!
