Cadences GI appointment
Hello everyone, somehow I managed to forget to put up a subject on my last post and it won't let me click on it now, so I guess I will have to re-post it again. I am happy to report that our family is over the flu now and Cadence is feeling much better, I think the prevacid might be kicking in as well, for the first time in a long time Cadence has been a happy baby all day long, it was so nice to see him content!! I still couldn't put him down though but I don't mind it, I have heard that gerd babies are attached to moms hips all the time! :) I wanted to ask you very helpful and informative mothers about our first GI appointment that is happening bright and early tomorrow morning, what are some important questions to ask him, and what should I expect from our first visit? I know it was confirmed at the hospital that Cadence has severe reflux, but I am wondering will the first visit just be talking and examining the baby or will he want to do tests right away to see if there are any underlying issues, or damage caused by the reflux? I have been keeping a diary of feedings and habits for the last two days and I also jotted down Cadences reflux history, meds and any other questions that pop into my head. I am looking forward to hopefully getting some answers from the GI. Any opinions or advice you have for me is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Sara, Mom to Isobel 10/01/08 Dx Silent reflux @ 6 wks. Prevacid 22.5mg split in 2 doses. Pepcid .5ml twice a day. Diagnostically confirmed milk protein, egg and cat allergy. Suspected corn, pea and squash allergy. Trialed Alimentum and Elecare without success, currently on Isomil Advance RTF with moderate success. Barium Swallow and UGI 3/08 Pondering a ph probe and endoscopy.
My only thought right now is to make sure you leave with a plan of action for his treatment/testing and then also some idea of what to do when Cadence is having a crap day. I could prolly think of a ton of stuff if it wasn't 3:45am KWIM? I hope you landed a good GI- personable and caring would be nice too.

Ya it is 1:20 am here in Spokane, Washington and I am still trying to get Cadence to sleep, he is very stubborn, I am typing with one hand because Cadence wants to be lulled to sleep! :) and we need to be up in 5 hours to get ready for the GI visit so I am thinking this mama is going to be pretty sleepy tomorrow, I better double up on my caffeine intake!!! Have a good night, hope you get some rest. I will post how the GI visit goes, he is a pedi GI so he better be nice and caring, he doesn't want to mess with a mother that has a reflux baby, twins, no sleep and probably drank too much coffee! :)

We met with the GI today and it went well, the plan is to keep Cadence on the prevacid, but we changed over to solutabs, wow they are so much easier to give, no more battles! He has been on prevacid for 11 days now, and I think it is beginning to work, I have seen a big difference in the last 2 days, Cadence went from taking in only 12-15 oz a day to 19-24 oz of formula, and he is smiling alot more. Tho GI wants us to do the stomach emptying study in a week, but he is confident the prevacid will work for him until he grows out of reflux. The only thing I thought was strange was his opinion on Sandifers, he said it was just back and neck arching, not seizure like movements or eyes rolling.

Yeah!! I'm so glad it went well. The solutabs are much easier and you don't have to worry about them being stable! That's great your little guy is drinking more. i've enjoyed hearing your updates. Thanks! We just had a gastric emptying scan done this past Thursday.

Glad to hear he's starting to feel better and that your appt went well. Good luck on your stomach emptying test. We're waiting for our gi appt coming up on Wed. I'm glad you posted the question about being prepared for your appt because I was about to post the same thing. I definitely will be writing a journal of his feeds and behaviors too since I read your post so thanks. Hang in there! It seems that prevacid does take awhile to work but once it does it gets better. We've been on it for a little over 2 weeks and just got upped on the dose. We just started seeing a little improvement here and there.
