need help getting son to take alimentum
I currently am breastfeeding but withe all of Kody's watery mucousy stools we thought that we might try alimentum while I pump to see if it would help him feel better. Well we ried yesterday to give it to him but he wouldn't drink it. I know it tastes nothing like bm but how do I get him to take it. Did anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

Sara, Mom to Isobel 10/01/08 Dx Silent reflux @ 6 wks. Prevacid 22.5mg split in 2 doses. Pepcid .5ml twice a day. Diagnostically confirmed milk protein, egg and cat allergy. Suspected corn, pea and squash allergy. Trialed Alimentum and Elecare without success, currently on Isomil Advance RTF with moderate success. Barium Swallow and UGI 3/08 Pondering a ph probe and endoscopy.
Check out the nipples you are using. Too fast or too slow can be frustrating. Also temperature of formula can be a big deal to some LOs. I went through 4 different bottle/nipple combos before I found one Isobel would take. If it's just a taste issue then I don't know. Does Kody taste and then refuse? What about trying nutramigen instead? Good luck in finding what works!

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
My son acted like I was giving him poison when I tried to give this to him. I have up and tried Similac Sensitive which is lactose free. He accepted that and the watery mucuos went a way in less than a day. Worth a try.

You can also try mixing it with breastmilk, a little at a time instead of trying to give a whole bottle.

Shawna: First time Mom to Mallory (10/07/08). Silent reflux diagnosed at 2 months. Alimentum formula fed. Trial of Losec (minimal effect). Now Prevacid 1x/day plus Zantac 2x/day.
That's what we did.... mixed the two together gradually increasing the amount of alimentum and after a few days she took the alimentum no problem.

Yeah, can't really blame a kid for not wanting Alimentum. Our nick name for it was vomit...really that formula is nasty have you tasted it...LOL I did, it made me want to puke..LOL

On a more serious note....I'd mix it and see if that goes well. You can try to do it 50/50 and see if that words, if if doens't you can always mes more BM and less formula nd start at a lower mix and see if it works. KWIM

Have you tried TED?? I know some who have done it well and solved issues that way. I never would have been able to do it but I know some that did it for over a year!!!! More power to them.

I haven't tasted the formula yet but the ped said it didn't taste that good. I can't tell now if it's the bottle or the formula. We did try mixing a little bit of bm but I don't think it was enough. I have to get on a scedule to pump which is hard. He wouldn't take it from my hubby today so I just nursed him. He hasn't had a bottle in a little while so we're going to try and give him just bm in a bottle first. I haven't tried the TED yet. I don't know if I can do it. It took me awhile to get used to just going df. I told myself if I had to try to take soy out next I would probably just stop. I like bfing but with everything else going on I don't think my brain and body could take anything else. I just don't know what's causing his pain and discomfort. I hope the gi will figure it out but at this point I have to get all my details of what's going on with him to get the right treatment for him. We're finding out tomorrow if he has any blood in his stool. Poor guy has just had so much mucous in his stool. Is that an allergy sign? Does anyone know?

I would say the mucous is a sign of MSPI. And I really don't blame you for not doing TED there is NO way I'd have the will power to do that at all.

BTW the Alimentum tastes WAY worse than it smells if that gives you any indication of it's taste. It's AWFUL and yes I tasted it. It's really really gross.

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
We had this EXACT same issue when we tried to wean my dd onto Alimentum - she hated it. She even knew when we tried to introduce it a half ounce at a time. You may want to try Nutramigen. They are similarly broken down (it's just the Enfamil equivalent). Halley LOVED that - not sure why, but she did. Good luck!

I managed to get Lachlan back on the Alimentum by blending half a small banana into his last feed of the day then straight Alimentum for the night feed. He took it fine.. Before this he was gagging.
