erythromycin?
Anyone else's child on this? My daughter has been for the past 2 months. It makes me nervous that I don't hear more about other children with reflux taking it. Is this an old therapy?

Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
We don't have personal experience but it is to help empty their tummy faster. It is kind of like using Reglan and I think it is a doctor preference thing or the child may react to one over the other better. Our ped said that it is still controversial to some docs and others feel like it is a great thing. Last I had heard it is not indicated for the treatment of reflux by the manufacturers but that it is widely used for that purpose. There are so many medications that are like this one. I think if you feel like it is working and helping with no major side effects then good for you.

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
We tried it when the Reglan stopped working for Zack. It unfortunately did nothing for us, but there were no side effects. Basically you are relying on a side effect of the drug to work, but as you know not everyone exeperiences the same side effects from drugs, so it's a crapshoot. Reglan worked well for us for a while. It is a little scary with it's side effects, but they are easily recognizable and you can stop the drug at that time. I hope they erythro is working for you, I sure wish it did for us!!!

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
E-mycin worked for us. Not as well as Reglan. We really wanted to stay on Reglan but Jedd had the extreme crankiness side affect so we had to stop. He was literally screaming all day long unless he was sleeping.

It's normally given in such low doses that you should see much negative with taking it. It's not an "old" practice to use E-mycin in this way though. Lots of GIs will do it.

If you are worried about taking an ABX long term and the affects on the GI "good" bacteria you can use a Probiotic along with it. We didn't when we were using it and Jed was fine. He does however take a Probitic now though.

probiotic?
Interesting. What is a probiotic? Where do you buy it and what are the benefits?

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Probiotics are good bacteria that help balance the gut flora. The more live strains you can get, the better usually. You probably already know that yogurt has "cultures" - this is one or a few strains of probiotics. You can find these at most health food stores, sometimes regular pharmacies will have them, or you can order them online. The better ones will be stored refridgerated to keep the strains active.

We buy our probiotic at a local health foods store. Upon opening it it must be put in the fridge in order for the good bacteria to live. Ours has 4 strands in it I think. It costs us about $20 for a 26oz bottle. I give Jedd 10ccs a day. It is also flavored like blueberry but it is still pretty bitter. He will still take it really well though.

they are actually really good for you to take because they hlep the good bacteria in the GU tract to flourish. So whether you are taking an ABX or not, I'd use them.

Check with your
doctor first!
