Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
Lots of moms use miralax to help with the constipation. I am sure you will hear from them.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Oh my Lord, have we dealt with constipation! Probiotics are fantastic, esp if you can get one with at least 10 live strains. That takes up to 2 weeks to work, but I won't take my girl off of them. The probiotics also can help with reflux.

We have also used a magnesium supplement since 4 months old to help with intestinal motility and irritability - ask the doc about that though (and prunes help as well.) Apple juice, pear juice, prune juice, extra water are all useful.

When those aren't quite enough or you just need to get the old stuff out, you can use Miralax which is OTC, but I'd ask the doc beforehand if it's okay and to get the proper dosage. Another Rx med that can help is Lactulose.

Abdominal massage can help keep things moving - start at the right hip, go up to the bottom of the ribcage, across to the left and then down to the left hip. Don't switch directions - that blocks things back up

Some stuff to avoid, though you may already know - apples, bananas, rice, and excess cheese. There are others, but those are the big ones.

Mary & Nicholas 7-17-03 (non-refluxer)allergies, asthma on Singulair and Flovent & Aidan 1-28-07(my refluxer)Nissen Fundoplication on June 20, 2008, FTT, MSPI, DGE, ear tubes, allergies and severe GERD now currently taking just Prevacid and drinking Elecare Vanilla 1+.
Going back on the Prevacid may really help as Prevacid is used off-label to treat constipation. We had to use Mirilax off and on in order to help with the constipation. I think seeing a GI is a great idea and wouldn't hesitate to go.

Should I avoid!
We have tried Miralax (she has taken an adults dose) and it does nothing for her. Also someone mention avoiding Apples... does that mean applesauce too... because sometimes that ALL she will eat. And since I am breast feeding should I avoid these foods? I have no idea what I am doing!

Yep, it does mean applesauce. It's the pectin in the apples that can make constipation worse. Pears seem to be okay, so will she eat pears? If not, and that's all she'll eat, maybe mix the applesauce with oatmeal cereal for fiber.

I doubt that the pectin would come through the breastmilk, so it should be okay. Miralax also takes a few days to work, and if nothing by the 3rd day, I'd call the MD and ask about lactulose. I also agree about seeing an GE - the gastroenterologist may order some testing (like a barium with a small bowel follow through) to check for an anatomical reason for constipation, or if it's functional constipation (that's what my dd has - you just pump fiber and liquids and it's usually okay)

Oh - the miralax needs to be taken for at least 3 days, not just one dose and wait. Sorry - my brain's not formulating things very well today
