Are you new here?
Hello and welcome. We created this section of our web site because so many adults contact us with questions about GERD. We wanted to create an area where you can compare ideas with other adults who have acid reflux. You can offer practical tips or share your experiences. What worked for you? What didn't? What are you thinking about trying next?

Avoiding Embarrassment and Getting Help
In December, 2008, after about three days of feeling lousy and thinking that it was going to go away, I told my husband, a firefighter, that I had been experiencing a tightness in my chest and the feeling that I couldn't get enough air. Off we went to the ER, with me thinking that I didn't want to waste anyone's time, and my husband thinking I was nuts for waiting three days. Of course, he was correct. I ended up in the cardiac care unit, underwent an angiogram, and left the hospital knowing I hadn't had a heart attack, but not knowing why I felt lousy. I was much calmer about the not having a heart attack part. One doctor, out of the many that I saw, asked me if I had recurrent heartburn. I answered that I had not. But, that turned out to be the key to the puzzle. After one month, I felt like myself again, and decided it was some weird virus, until this year, in January, when it started all over again. I did not return to the ER, but did start researching my symptoms. I had the feeling that I could not breathe again, but added the things that I have felt for decades but thought nothing about...the strange metallic taste in my mouth, the feeling that there is always a lump in my throat when swallowing, the light burning sensation (yes, hearburn, but not like I thought heartburn was supposed to feel),and my cough. And, up came the many write-ups about GERD. I scheduled a doctor's appointment and went in with the list of symptoms, but did not tell him what my research had found. He told me that I had presented him with a "gift-wrapped" description of acid reflux and a hiatal hernia and prescribed Nexium. Two weeks of Nexium, and I was back to my regular self. I now take Nexium, on a daily basis, to see how it affects the symptoms that I have taken for granted as part of how my body functions. The moral to this long story is this...if you have symptoms that could be serious, like those of a heart attack, don't wait three days to go to the emergency room. Get in there immediately and get treated. If the diagnosis is acid reflux, get back with your physician and develop a plan specifically for your symptoms.

Going to the ER
Supercollar, Thanks for bringing up this vital topic right away. Some people have heartburn that is excruciatingly painful and others have just a mild sensation. I have almost no pain at all and I only know my acid reflux is out of control when my voice gets hoarse. I'm so glad that you went to the ER and equally glad it wasn't a heart attack. You are a very responsible consumer to then do your own research and go back to your regular doctor. So many people forget that important step. Thanks for sharing your story!
