Derek,10/29/02 GERD,Can't have any legumes(soy, being the worse), allergic to PN/Tree Nuts, struggled to gain weight for years, my "picky" eater,Takes Zegerid. Johnny, 12/05/99 GERD, managed by diet, allergic to cashews/pistachios.
Reflux bad if older child eats a lot????
My 9yr old was diagnosed with reflux in February(esophagitis in scope), but he has always eaten like crazy! How can he have reflux? I'm just so stumped. My 6yr old barely eats when his reflux is bad. The GI doc wants me to try weaning my 9yrold off meds now, saying he should be healed. From what? I don't get it, so now he says the reflux is gone? He's going on the fact that my son eats all the time. Anyone else have this with their kids?

Andrea: Mom to 3 crazy girls!
Jackie (3/01)
Payton (9/03)
Abby (4/06) Prevacid 7.5mg (evening), MSPI, goats milk (currently trying to wean off Prevacid)
I can't imagine why if he was just diagnosed in Feb the dr would want to wean him off meds so soon. As far as the eating goes, he might be eating so much kindof like how a baby comfort eats. That would be my guess. You've probably already asked him but if not I would ask him if he eats b/c of the reflux or how ever he describes his symptoms.

Kathryn, Pager Volunteer and mommy to Emily Mia 02/04/07. 3 years old with GERD. 30mg Prevacid and Pepcid AC. Mylanta needed for flares. Failed prilosec med switch. Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
my dd emily was a comfort eater while a baby and a food eater as a toddler. she likes things like milk and bread and will beg and scream when her reflux is bad. the more food makes her reflux worse, it's a bad cycle. don't really know what to do about it but just wanted to tell you that's what my dd does.

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
I agree with the others. I know of adults that think "if I just eat something, it'll settle my stomach down". It doesn't work, it makes it worse. I think it feels good for a short time, but in the long run it's not so good. I also can't imagine why the dr thinks it's magically gone. I guess it's like when they tell a mom of a big baby that the baby can't have reflux if they're gaining weight. I'd get a second opinion. :) I have a 9yr old, I'm sorry yours is going through this.

Lost my 33 yr old most physical fit husband 1 year ago, I miss him and his help! Feels so shitty and unfair. My baby getting better is the only thing that would bring my sanity back.
my son 2.5 has always been that same way as well.. if they are silent reflux it does bring relief...

Melina 7/24/02 now reflux free!!
Ella 5/3/05 GERD, asthma, hypotonia, food intolerances, esophagitis, IBS //
Ava 5/3/05 asthma, food allergies
Pic: My girls! They are getting so big!
My 3.5 yr old is a comfort eater too. She did back off when the esophagitis was at its worst but most of the time she is drinking or eating something to try to sooth it.

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
I think the medicines are giving in three month cycles. Are the symptoms that had him originally scoped gone? If so that's probably why he is trying a wean.

Trying everything before surgery.
My daughter does this. She will eat alot. I asked the PGI about this and he said that it makes her feel better, it can keep the acid down (but it is short term hence the more eating). I would not at all think that it is gone based on this eating cycle. And I think that if they are eating healthy things and it makes them feel better then let them eat. I just try to make sure that she is not eating junk and that she is active everyday. Bethe'

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
I found that following a "diabetic" eating schedule, it helps the acid. Basically it's the small amounts frequently. 3 meals and 3 snacks, so there's usually no more than 2-3 hours without something in the stomach.
