Mixing 24 calorie formula
Our nutritionist came today and wants to try Holden on 24 calorie formula. We have done this in the past with no luck but he was on Alimentum not Elecare. We're trying to do it now with the Elecare and hope he tolerates it now. Ok-Well I usually mix up 6 oz bottles. I know for a 24 calorie 5 oz bottle I would do 5 oz water to 3 scoops of formula. Well what would you do for a 6 oz bottle? She gave me a recipe but i think it is wrong as she tells me to put 3.2 scoops plus enough simply thick, water to equal six ounces. To make 20 cal formula you put 6 oz. of water with 3 scoops formula which makes the mixture come up to about 63/4 oz. Well also the simply thick adds more volume with no calories. For 20 calorie formula I have been making the water and simply thick come up to 6 oz mark because I didn't want the simply thick to dilute it any more so I am using it as part of the 6 oz water mixture. Does that make sense??? What to do? I also mix by the bottle not large quantities because of the simply thick issue (If I poured 6 oz of formula and added simply thick it would be diluted and it is too hard to add simply thick to make up that large of quantity when I'm having to have it take the place of the water) I hope you all can make some sense of this. Thanks!

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
well, 3.5 scoops is 25 cal per 6 oz. Truthfully, I concetrate the Elecare and I just add the formula to the bottle with 2 scoops of Duocal and then fill to 6 ounces. You aren't getting 6 ounces of liquid, but you are getting 6 ounces of volume. As long as your LO can take it and can keep it down happily you should be OK. If it's too much for him or too thick, just add a little more water til you find the magic amount..I would go up in .5 oz increments. Good luck..I'm not sure I've helped any! Oh and I THInK Elecare is thinner than Alimentium...

If you pack the powder in and have a level scoop it comes out to an extra 2 or 3 calories per scoop. I have a food scale and we calculated how much each gram weighs and packed vs. unpacked. Just pack it in good and you shouldn't have to remember a recipe, that is what we do.

Thanks! I think I obsess over things too much and with the additives-syrup and simply thick wow! Is a food scale expensive? My name is Tracy (spelled differently) too-Katies mommy! Also, do you pack it down by pressing it and rescooping some more and leveling off? Why in the world does a 6 oz bottle come up to the 63/4 line?? This stuff drives me crazy.

Hi Tracy! I just scooped it up and packed it at the same time. Kinda pressing down and scooping at the same time. It drives my husband crazy that 6 oz doesn't come out to 6 oz too! =)
