Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
Z's endoscopy
Z had his endoscopy on Friday morning. We had to be at the hospital at 6:30. At 7 they took him back (with me) and asked me a ton of questions. His GI came in and told me everything they were going to do and whatt o expect for the rest of the day. The anaesthesiologist came out and told me what HE was going to do. Then they took him from me and I went to the waiting room. Z wasn't screaming, but he wasn't happy. 30 min later the GI came out with pictures and explained what he saw. The esophagus looks fine, so the prevacid dosage is good and it's doing its job. The stomach had a couple of red inflamed areas that he biopsied, but he thinks they will be nothing under the microscope. The intestine looked fine. He did see the LES open on its own at one point (which it's NOT supposed to do), but when it's closed, it's closed up tight (which is good). We will get the biopsy results today or tomorrow. Z came out of anaesthesia in about 20 minutes and then screamed, threw up a TON of mucous and blood (not a ton of blood) and drank juice and water and threw it up and screamed and screamed...finally at about the hour mark, I just said "can we take him home" and they agreed since his vitals were all fine. The SECOND we got him out of the hospital dorrs he stopped crying...fell asleep for the 15 min ride home and then was fine the rest of the day! All in all, I'm glad we did it...I'm glad there is no damage and I'm glad it all went without a hitch! I'll scan the pics and put them up soon.

That's good news. No damage Yay! My son is having his first scope done in April. It is a triple scope though (MLB:Microlarangoscopy, Bronchoscopy, Flexible Bronchoscopy: lung washing, and EGD: Esophagus, Stomach, 1st part of intestines with biopsies). He's just 4 months old. I'm very nervous. Would love to see the pics.

Mom to Matthew, 01/16/08, GERD baby, has been on Zantac since 2 mos. Aidan, his twin brother, no GERD. Max-ed out on Zantac at 1ml-3 times/day, and switched to Prevacid 15mg split tab 08/20/08. Switched again to 20mg Prilosec 09/18/08 due to Prevacid's restlessness/headache side effects. Reflux was out of control again and had to switch to 10mg Nexium 02/11/09. Good result so far.
I am so glad Zack's endoscopy went smooth and everything was done so quickly. Did you have to stop the Prevacid before the scope? Did they take biopsy of the esophagus? The GI is considering scope for Matthew if his symptoms get worse again. They told me we will have to stop PPI for 4 days, only Mylanta/Mallox for pain and nothing to eat for 8 hrs, etc. I am dreading the pain he will have to go thru if we stop PPI for 4 days.

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
Glad the scope went well and no damage. Great news.

Z did not take Prevacid the morning of the scope, but was not asked to stop it ahead of time. We also did not stop Singulair and Zyrtec which many people told us we would have to stop. The doc said that if there was no presence of eosinophils while on the drug that it was controlled. If it was bad enough he would see it anyway. I'm not sure why you would need to stop the PPI. They were looking for damage which would be present PPI or not...unless they are trying to determine reflux...which we had long ago established was bad when he refluxed a million or so times during his Upper GI. Ugh.
