While waiting in for Prevacid to work
Hi, My dd has been on Prevacid for the past 2 wks.. After the 7th day we have seen much lesser screaming during feedings. But, we seem to have 2 good days followed by 2 bad days for the past 1 week ( day 7 - day 15 of Prevacid). Did any one of you face this kind of alternating good and bad day pattern before you found long lasting relief ? Just a couple of days ago we increased her dosage to 7.5 mg (half solutab) 2 times a day(AM/PM). Before that she was on approx 9 mg - 1x daily (AM).

Tracey, mom to Katie diagnosed with GERD at 3 week.
SHe could be on too high of a dose of Prevacid. For Katie it took a month before we saw any improvement and 6 weeks to get the full effect. We increased her dose a few months back because of colds, teething etc. and saw similar effects to before prevacid (more night waking, crying , arching, screaming in sleep) so we went back down to previous dose and used Mylanta to get her through. She is 18 months, 20 lbs. and on 11.5 mgs. split AM/PM.

Sara, Mom to Isobel 10/01/08 Dx Silent reflux @ 6 wks. Prevacid 22.5mg split in 2 doses. Pepcid .5ml twice a day. Diagnostically confirmed milk protein, egg and cat allergy. Suspected corn, pea and squash allergy. Trialed Alimentum and Elecare without success, currently on Isomil Advance RTF with moderate success. Barium Swallow and UGI 3/08 Pondering a ph probe and endoscopy.
Do you keep a log of feeding, meds, sleep and behavior? Maybe there's a pattern within those good and bad days. We haven't had that type of issue on prevacid, just the occasional rough day sprinkled here and there. Good luck.

At the beginning I remember us having those roller coaster days. Since you just increased her dose a few days ago, it will take time for that to kick in. We use Zantac along with Prevacid for the first 2months when Abby started Prevacid at 6wks. Just had to make sure we gave them at different times.

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
I would give the increase in meds some time to work. The 7.5mg twice a day seems to really help a lot of these kids. You could try using Mylanta for the pain until the prevacid kicks in.

We definitely had ups and downs. It took about 3 weeks to really kick in.

Her sleep during the nights have never been an issue so far. On bad days - she doesn't seem to ever get hungry, refuses to drink and is generally more fussy and irritable. On good days - drinks adequate amt. and seems to be less fussy. Other than this pattern, I haven't noticed much of a difference. We were adding rice cereal in her bottle up until we started 2 wks back. Since even with the rice cereal her reflux symptoms kept getting worse, we decided to take it out. Now she is just on Similac Advance / Organic.

What other formulas have you tried? What were the results? If you haven't already i would try a hydrosolate formula. I would get her off the milk based Similac though. It took us about 2 weeks with an upped dose before we say any relief. B
