New and ?'s about symptoms of reflux
Hi I am new on this site and am glad I found it. I have a 3 mo son who has silent reflux. He was put on axid at around 5 wks. After upping the dose one time it still did nothing for him so the pedi. switched him to prilosec. He only gets 1ml 2x a day. I think that's a low dose isn't it? He was doing better on the prilosec and then he started having screaming episodes and then diarrhea. He had two weeks of that and after a stool culture found out he had rotovirus. Ever since that diagnosis he has had terrible problems. He started drooling a lot and sticking his fist in his mouth. He also has had terrible days and nights of sleeping. He's been fussing after feeds and sometimes during. Sometimes even screaming. He's been getting worse every day. We can't figure out if this reflux or not. He's been doing this drooling thing and fist shoving for weeks now and we haven't seen one single bud of a tooth come through so we don't know what that's about. He's also had terrible gas and burping. He also has had terible stomach pains. He doesn't usually spit up that much but yesterday he spit up what looked to be like a bunch a stomach acid with hardly any signs of milk in it. Do these symptoms sound like he's suffering from his reflux? I can't figure it out but he is so miserable and we are so exhausted. Any help or insight would be great. Oh and we scheduled a gi appt for April 15. We had 1 before but cancelled it because he was so much better and then we decided to reschedule it after all this. Anyway sorry so long. I'm sure I left a lot out but it's already long enough and my son is actually sleeping for now so don't have too long.

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
That definitely sounds like reflux symptoms. I'm so glad you already have a GI appt. Hopefully they will get him on his way to recovery :) Welcome to the forum!

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
Definitely sounds like reflux. A stomach flu can send reflux into orbit and it takes a long time for the kiddos tummies to settle down. I am glad you are seeing a ped. GI. Maybe he/she will put your son on Prevacid solutabs. They are very easy to take and you don't have to worry about the compounding issues.

Sounds like he is teething too. Even if you don't see the tooth coming in he can be feeling the pain. The drooling and the hand in mouth suggests it

May take a little while for everything to calm down

Make sure that you are giving his prilosec on an empty stomach

Maybe some mylanta would help since his stomach is still icky from the flu

Really glad you are seeing a GI. They are much better equipped to handle this. I wouldn't cancel even if he starts feeling better

Best of luck

Thanks for responding. Sometimes I think I'm going crazy and the only one that really believes that it's reflux is my hubby, me and thankfully our ped. He's been really congested in the back of his throat too and been coughing on his stuff coming up as well as sounding hoarse. Does anyone else deal with that congestion problem and hoarseness? He has it all the time. Sometimes it is a lot more noticeable than other times.

Sara, Mom to Isobel 10/01/08 Dx Silent reflux @ 6 wks. Prevacid 22.5mg split in 2 doses. Pepcid .5ml twice a day. Diagnostically confirmed milk protein, egg and cat allergy. Suspected corn, pea and squash allergy. Trialed Alimentum and Elecare without success, currently on Isomil Advance RTF with moderate success. Barium Swallow and UGI 3/08 Pondering a ph probe and endoscopy.
When my DD's reflux was out of control she was often hoarse. We are currently dealing with sinus congestion and lung congestion but can't figure if it's reflux or allergy.

I would guess that once you get the reflux under control some of the conjestion and hoarseness will go away.
