16 month old-- transition to cow's milk-- RESULTS=BAD!
Ok so I haven't been on here in quite a while but still see some familiar names. It's been a roller coaster with Luca but overall he is a healthy 16 month old. A lot more colds and ear infections than we wanted so he just got tubes last month. My curent issue is this: We have tested him for every allergy on earth and he has come back negative. But all three times we tried to transition to whole milk he would wake up screaming in the middle of the night. It was done 3 diff times with the same result so it's too much for it to be coincidence. Does anyone else have this similar result in transitioning? Maybe this is more of a intolerance and not an allergy so I don't know. What do I do now? More formula? Is there other options? I tried goat's milk and while it was tolerated, it wasn't very convenient to to it's cost formula is more practical! Does anyone else have any experience with this? Also he will not eat solids. Still things have to be very pureed. Except for carbs like bread and crackers.. and still gags every so often! Just does not want to chew. His molars are starting to break thru-- does anyone have experience with the sme issue and did it get better or resolve when the molars came in? We do OT but it seems like her take is just he needs to keep practicing. I just think these little guys do to all the pain of GERDS hate food! Can you blame them? Thanks for all your suggestions and advise! -Mercy Liz

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
My dd was not able to go onto whole milk (same result...screaming and tummy ache), so we tried 2% with success. You may want to give skim or 1% a try to see if he can tolerate it. Can he eat cheese or other milk products?

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
My sister's DD had to do Soy milk (silk) for about 11 months after she turned one. Then they made the transition just fine. You may just need time. She got horrible horrible diarrhea when she drank milk or ate milk fatty ice cream.

You can try goat milk or hemp milk or coconut milk too.

We had success with goats milk when transitioning Abby off of Neocate at 14mos. But we did a REALLY slow transition like over 6mos to get to full goats milk. As far as convience our health food store carries powdered goats milk. You can pre measure it just like formula and just mix it with water. It was great for on the go and for trips. Also, Walmart where we live carries goats milk.

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
I think I might be having the same problem. Zack is alomost 100% Elecare fed, but I have been trying to get some other falvors and textures in. I got a Yoplait smoothie (obviously lactose based) and he threw it up a while later...he tried about two oz of Pediasure last night and 2.5 hrs later he woke up screaming and threw it up...weird, but I'm thinking the dairy (although he tested neg as well) is not good for him. Rice milk is no problem, but not enough fat or cal.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
We did a VERY slow transition to milk - 1/2 oz milk to 7 1/2oz formula for 2 weeks, then went up to 1 oz, etc. Took a while, but she's been on just milk for about 4 months now.

Solids/table food. Still dealing with this at 18 months. Allie still gets primarily purees with bites of table food and such. We just go with what she'll eat that day. Some "adult" food that's still puree-like - yogurt, pudding, applesauce, etc along with some of what we're eating seems to encourae her to try more table food. HTH! Oh - and molars DEFINITELY disrupt the food intro! GERD could be aggravated by those teeth coming in too.

Thank you guys! Yeah he did well on goat's milk-- that we can tell... no crying at night. I tried the powder stuff. Thing is while he eats yogurts and cheeses and stuff just fine, I don't know if they are too good on his tummy. When he was completely off dairy he was healthy no colds, no vomitting and such. Seemed like GERDS was a thing of the past. Then as dairy was in his diet-- the vomitting became more common-- like the digestion was once again slowed just like when he was younger and on reglan. I guess I can try lower fat milk, like 2% or 1%. Seems like that would make it easier to digest. He is going to the doctor's today cuz it seems like he's had in addition a stomach flu... hasn't been able to hold down solids all weekend. So we will ask the ped about 2% etc. Thank you for all your responses!

Also remember, i think i wrote in someone elses topic... babies with GERD tend to have GI allerigies... which are completely differant from regular allergies and are NOT picked up in regular allergy testing. So the only way you can test to see if maybe your lil one has a GI allergy to dairy is to take a biopsy of his lil gi tract during a biopsy. When a baby with GI allergies consumes something his lil tummy system dont like, his GI system will become inflamed and irritated and have sort of an allergic reaction. My 14 month old who has severe GERD reacted VERY negativly to introducing whole milk. He was on Similac Alimentum until one and i tried to introduce cows milk because his allergy test came back negative...but no good... he was up all night, vomiting and throwing up... it was wretched. So his GI doctor told me he probably has GI allergies and to put him on Soy milk. Im still doing a trial of the soy milk now, but it seems to be working better. Also, my baby also only tolerated pureed foods. And still even gags on those. We are also seeing a therapist, but it is going to take time. Our little ones just have to learn over time and practice and play with textured foods... that they'll not hurt them. Anyway, hope that helps some!
