Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
can't do it without mylanta
Well, trying to go without Mylanta as my GI ordered has not worked. SHe is still getting tummy aches and eventually I give in and give her the medicine.

My husband is pissed off at the GI cuz she knew we were using Mylanta with the Prevacid all this time. He's like mad at me that he's mad at the doctor.

The doc said if she still needs mylanta then she should be on a different medicine. Well I just bought 90 days of Prevacid at $1,000. SHe said she can't go higher than the 45mg of Prevacid with Katie.

So now I think I need to get a seconed opinion from another doc.

Do you guys think I am doing a bad thing with the mylanta? It just seems to soothe her better than anything. I know it's not great because of the aluminum or magnesium or whatever but what is a mother to do? My doc also will not do carafate.

Sorry to ramble........ also sorry I have posted three times about this.

Any thoughts??????

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
No worries, mama - the magnesium and aluminum in the mylanta are fine. They're trace minerals that we need, and that prevacid blocks anyway. Just a thought, if they're just tummy aches and not reflux pain, can you try maybe just a gas reliever? Stomach pain can be a side effect of the prevacid itself, even if the med is working (diarrhea and constipation are also side effects) Maybe trying a new drug could help? And maybe the pharmacy could take back the unopened tabs if you do try another med.

Have you tried Colic Calm? We use Mylanta a lot for my GERD daughter, but found out about this product called Colic Calm. It is all natural and really does well in calming her stomach. The primary ingrediant is vegetable charcol, which makes it black. It can be kinda messy if they spit it out, but it really works! Then you wouldn't have to deal with the minerals and such in Mylanta. Just a thought...

Tracey, mom to Katie diagnosed with GERD at 3 week.
Our pharmacist suggested Tums since they are calcium carbonate and calcium can be blocked by prevacid; just like slimfast said. OMG Julie!! $1,000 for 90 days worth!!!?? I will no longer complain about the cost going from 20 to 30 dollars a month!!

I know. That was because we have a $2400 deductable which we quickly reached between Katie and my son's medicine. Now that we have met the deductable it will be much cheaper, I think $100 dollars for a 90 day supply. But still that was a zinger!!!!

Good idea to try the tums and colic calm.

Thanks

Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
It is really interesting you are posting this. We went to see a new ped last week and she has us doing four doses of Maalox per day. A is on 4mls of Zantac twice a day and Nexium in between those. Then she is to take 1/2 tsp of Maalox with every meal and at bedtime. She wants us to do that for a month and then start cutting it down. We are getting ready to get a second opinion on GI issues and I am ready to hear what she will say. I'm not sure I am comfortable with giving so many meds for reflux. That and it makes it hard to spread out all the other meds she is on. She has two others for allergies and then Benadryl, which she is taking four times a day because of the antibx reaction. It is insane trying to plan all of her meds some days.

I don't really have any add'l suggestions but I hope you figure things out and that Katie gets some relief.

Is she suggesting all the Mylanta and Maalox to address the pain issues? Seems like she would suggest carafate rather than so many doses to figure out and keep up with.

Good luck with the second opinion. Let us know what they say.
