Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
Is it normal to still need Mylanta
Katie has been on 45mg prevacid since her scope showed damage in Sept. I still use Mylanta every day. It seems she complains of a stomach ache daily.

I give her the Mylanta and then 2 -10 minutes later she is better. Sometimes before she finishes it she says "all better". Many times it is just that she has to poop.

Do you think this is normal or may it be an indication she should be on a higher dose???

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
I'm wondering if it may be habit - you know, like needing a bandage for everything. Not to discount the pain these kids go through, but kids will be kids.

That's what I can't figure out. It's weird that she recovers so quickly from the stomach pain. I know that since she has gone through all of this her tolerance for pain is very low. If she gets a paper cut it is like her hand has been chopped off.

I just second guess myself cuz I made big mistakes first time around and I don't want to ignore something that may be signaling a problem in her med dosage.

Also mom to Nathan. born Jan.20th, 2009, MPI . so far dx with reflux and has an extremely sensitibe GI system. Also dx with primary immune deficiency disease.
Maybe it's not stomach pain...maybe it's heartburn. That would explain why it feels better so quickly? Just guessing????

Maybe try just giving her half of her normal Mylanta dose and she if she is still fine after that. Then if she is still complaining give her the rest.

That's a good idea. Why didn't I think of that. I'll try giving her less and see if she still gets better.

Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
I was thinking the same thing - give her half. You can always mix it with water to bring it up to the same "amount" you were giving before. If she needs the Mylanta, she'll still have tummy problems. If she doesn't, then you'll know it was more a security thing. Also, I've heard that at higher dosages Prevacid can cause tummy pain. Could it be that she needs to move to Nexium?

I agree with Donnessa. Sometimes Katie will get better if I give her motrin way before it should have kicked in. I sometimes just wonder if she gets low blood sugar or knows that "medicine" in whatever form makes her feel better.

Yesterday she said she had a tummy ache. I was involved with something else and didn't give her anything. 10 minutes later she was running around the house as if nothing happened. Hmmmmm......interesting the psychology of these kiddos. Definitely think I should try to back off of the Mylanta - maybe it is also my security blanket.
