Simply Thick/Thickening formula
Hey all -

I've recently started thickening Isobel's formula as her reflux is a little out of control right now. Horrible raspy breathing right after she feeds, lots of wet hiccups and audible refluxing (she's not a puker).. They're so right when they say 4 - 6 months is tough. We just added pepcid to the mix a few days ago but I'm not seeing any obvious effect at this point.

At first I was thickening with rice cereal but I just got a bottle of Simply Thick. I tried it for the first time today, but when mixing it there were TONS of tiny bubbles that didn't seem to ever go away. Also, Isobel doesn't seem to like it - it's almost like it coats her throat too much and makes her raspy breathing truly scary sounding.

I'm wondering what other moms have experienced with Simply Thick. What technique do you use to mix it? Any thoughts or tips? I hate to give Isobel so much rice because it seems to fill her up and she won't take enough formula to fulfill her fluid requirements. Has anyone else seem a reduction of fluid consumption when thickening with rice? When thickening period?

Any thoughts or ideas appreciated!

Renee, mother to Nicholas, born 4/18/08 with silent reflux, moderate laryngomalacia, Sandifer's Syndrome& suspected MSPI. On Neocate, Simply Thick and Prevacid. Also mother to Nathan, born 12/06/06, who had mild reflux the first few months.
Hi, We have been using Simply Thick with Nicholas for about 6-7 months now. It has been great for him. The bubbles are normal. That just means it's working right. I didn't notice a fluid reduction with the simply thick, but he did eat less when we thickened with rice. I assume because the rice is very filling. What is the source of the raspy breathing? Nicholas has laryngomalacia and I know he got raspy after eating because (according to our MD) some of the formula would get trapped in the floppy part of the larynx after he ate, making a rattly/raspy sound for a bit.

She hasn't been diagnosed with laryngomalacia. We think it's reflux coming up far enough to get a bit into her glottis. It's the most horrible raspy death rattle type breathing. Do you notice if the bubbles in the simply thick cause excess gas? I think she doesn't like it because it coats so thickly. I'm just at a loss as far as what to do - she's only taking about 25 oz a day and she's 15 lbs. She's still gaining, but barely.

The bubbles have never seemed to cause Nicholas gas, no. I have never used it, but Thick It is another thickner and it has added calories, unlike the Simply Thick. Maybe it would work better for her.

I thought about that but it's made of maltodextrin and Isobel is sensitive to corn. I guess I'll just use rice cereal for now. I really thought more moms here used thickeners - thanks for responding to my question!
