What You Wished You Knew- Reflux
I am doing a informative speech for one of my classes. A couple members/friends suggested i do my speech on Reflux. Now it is something I know a lot about, as many of us here do since we live with it everyday. Over the past 2 years I have done tons of research but I would like my speech to be more audience friendly.

my question to you all is: Knowing what you know now about reflux, What do you wish you knew in the beginning?

This is my rough outline of three points:
1) What causes it.
2) testing
3)medical and non medical treatments

If anybody has anything to add i will be grateful for your help!

I am Jacky, mommy to Joslyn Olivia (April 2008) and Katelyn Isabel (November 2009).
Joslyn was dx'ed with Silent Reflux with breath apnea at 5 days old. VERY SCARY!
Katelyn is a spitter reflux baby. Started at 3 days old as well. (Both were/are breast fed.. symptoms came on when my milk came in).
Joslyn has been reflux free since she was 12 months (suffered poor weight gain for a few months) and Katelyn is now on Zantac... waiting to see if it works.
how reflux can affect their breathing. I had no idea that reflux could even be "silent" and that it could stop babies from breathing and make them turn blue!

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
I wish before she was diagnosed, I would have known the signs. Even though I was giving the symptoms to my ped, he didn't catch the reflux till my ob caught it :)

I wish I had known that her latching issues and crying spells pointed to something that was treatable. It would have saved me several weeks of screaming ;-)

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
OMGosh only 5-7 mins, I think we could all fill an HOUR...LMAO.

Maybe add some thing about the need for high meds and how they sometimes get denied by ins. co. but then, I think just covering what you have mentioned, you will have more than enough.

I wish I knew that many times the doctors cannot answer the question: Why? And how do we stop it?

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
to quote the others...that it's is SERIOUS in some kids...yeah, some kids just spit up...but some have their lives threatened by it...that it's effects in the long run with oral aversion and food refusal are astronomical in some kids. ...that too many docs just wantt o chop the kid open and doa fundo without any testing or med intervention. ...that the fundo IS NOT a quick fix. If I have one more uninvolved doctor look at me like i'm a loon for not having a fundo done on my child yet. Zack's GI is more conservative, but very watchful. ...that it's just not fair. :(

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
That it's not *just* spit-up - it's a serious medical condition. Any time people pooh-poohed Halley's reflux, I asked them if they had ever had heartburn and how would they feel if they had it every single day and could do NOTHING about it themselves. That was usually enlightening to them. Also, IMO there is no such thing as colic. If a baby is crying and not sleeping - there is a reason. Good luck on the speech - you've nearly earned your MD in this by now.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
I think I'd touch on the physical aspects, the treatment options (and maybe mention that due to ins problems, sometimes your options are limited!) I'd really mention the impact on family, esp first time moms and moms of multiple refluxers and the lack of social support that can happen. Just 5-7 min - sheesh. Maybe we ought to pull together a national conference!

How embarassing it is when your baby completly soaks your friend (I mean dripping off her to a puddle on the floor) of your breastmilk! lol

I would open by making everybody take a dose of zantac syrup :) Mags didn't use it but it's supposedly nasty.
Check with your
doctor first!
