Weaning off Prevaid
Hi, my daughter just turned 1 and has been on prevacid since she was 8 weeks old. We successfully weaned until she started teething and had to go back on. Now I would like to wean again. I'm wondering what your tips are? She is currently taking half the 15 mg solutabs once a day and has done superb on that. Should I try cutting that dose in half again or try every other day? What are your suggestions? We accidentally went a few days without giving the dose and it is causing a lot of acid rebound, so I want to avoid that! Thanks and keep your fingers crossed for us, I'm not that hopeful but I'd loved to try and get her off! Jen

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
I think it's an individual thing. Most cut it a tiny bit at a time. Like take away 1/4 or 1/2 the dose for a week or two and see how it does. Usually you'll know pretty quick if it's gonna work or not. It just really depends on the child. My only real advice is to leave the bedtime dose till last. Don't mess with it till you've weaned from the other doses.

Wish you well :)

Now, take this with the grain of salt that our son's GERD was severe but...

I wouldn't wean. Period. If you had a flare up like that after only missing a handful of doses it is JMHO that she is not ready. Keep in mind that we have been told that it can take the body up to 3-5 weeks to fully rid itself of the med even when you stop, and you got that reaction.

Does your GI want you to stop or have you decided to do it on your own??? Alot of time parents want to wean because all seems to be going well. But, that is just a sign that the meds are doing there job well. Once off meds, all heck can break loose again.

I'd just be really careful. Really careful. The damage that can be done by reflux can be awful compared to staying on the med longer than you want. Again, JMHO.

We were able to wean Jedd form a PPI to a PPI and an H2blocker then to an H2 full time now. That's as far as we will go until he can verbally TELL us how he feels off meds.

Just trying to be completely honest here. (((HUGS))) Good luck.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
I agree with jeddsmommy - if you only miss a few days and she's having problems, then she's probably not ready to wean yet. I'd talk to the MD - if your doc insists on weaning, maybe ask about weaning down to an H2 blocker first. Or using something like Maalox for flare ups. There isn't a magic age, like were were all told or would like to believe. My daughter's GERD is mild, yet at 17 months, we've still not been given the go-ahead to wean off Prevacid. JMO

Jeddsmommy- you are probably right and thats basically the conclusion we've come to after having progressively worse behavior as the day went on. Her sleeping has gotten bad again. We missed 2 days (accidentally) + today but we ended up giving her a dose this afternoon. We only give one dose a day just 7.5 mgs in the morning and we've been doing great and because the dose is so low I thought maybe we could wean off. I was wondering if her problems yesterday/today were rebound acid because we went cold turkey. Anyway, thanks so much for your advice. We've decided to go back on full dose and see if it improves and once we're back to normal we might try to step down gradually, not cold turkey. We'll see, I cannot go back to full fledged reflux baby though, I'm pregnant right now and I think I'd freaking lose my mind. Its so scary to try and wean but I don't want to keep her on these meds just because I'm scared to try kwim? LOL, but for now we're back on.

Don't feel bad. We tried many weans with Jedd's allergy meds. Even in the middle of winter and it has NEVER gone well so we just keep him on the max dose. It's really not a pretty sight when he comes off that one. It is ugly!!! LOL

If it is any consolation, Jedd was on a PPI for about20 months. A pretty high dose as well. Then we did both types and then we were able to go to an H2 full time.

Give it time. We didn't wean over to the H2 full time until Jedd was a bit over 2. Like you said, it's better ti have a happy baby on meds than a baby in horrible pain off meds. :(

You can try again, but I'd wait like 6 months. Even then it may not be time. It's ok, it will be alright. I know there are lots of studies that say to use it short term but when you think about it, two years really IS short term in the grand scheme of their little lives.

I agree with the pps - she's probably not ready yet. We had to try 4 times before we were finally able to get my daughter off. We tried at 6 months, 9 months, 1 year and were successful at 14 months. Good luck!
