symptoms worse w/ higher meds? time to kick in?
My daughter has been taking prilosec for about 4 weeks (she had 4 weeks of zantac before that). Her dose wasof prilosec was very low (4mg 1x daily) but was tripled last week to 6mg twice a day. She weighs ~ 14lbs. It actually seems to me like she is doing more silent refluxing (swallowing whenever she wakes up in her crib), also seems to be doing a bit more coughing and sounds phlegmy . I don't know if this is related to her higher dose in meds or just coincidence. she also seems to be waking more frequently at night. How long does it usually take for an increased dose to help and is it strange that I'm noticing more reflux behavoirs on the higher dose? when we switched from zantac to prilosec the first 2 days were the worst we'd had in a long time (we stopped cold turkey on the zantac and just went straight to the prilosec). I appreciate any input on the increased dose and symptoms/how long it takes to really see a difference.

Tracey, mom to Katie diagnosed with GERD at 3 week.
I can't speak from experience with prilosec but on too high of a dose of prevacid my dd is much worse. She wakes at night and is generally more uncomfortable. Katie is 20 lbs. and takes 11.5 mgs. of prevacid, the full 15 mgs. was too high for her.

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
A while back I thought my daughter was doing worse on an increased dose of prevacid. We pulled back on the dose. Turns out she had irritation in her stomach & espoph. and needed an even higher dose.

IMHO I think you should talk to the doc about seeing a Ped. GI to help you figure the meds and the dosing.

Thanks for the information!! According to the AZ website my daughter should be getting around 5mg by weight, not the 12 she is getting. I know the dosing recommendations are for >1yr though and she's 6 mos. It sounds like this could be too high of a dose for her. I definitely agree about the specialist. We did see one and that is how the dose got increased from 4 to 12 mg. Although the GI we saw is reputable I'm questioning some of his practices and at the very least his bedside manner so am inclined to seek a second opinion. Especially since we aren't seeing an improvement and things seem worse if anything on the higher dose.

Did they do any tests or just increase it based on symptoms? For that dosage, I'd think they would do some tests. Usually an upper GI and pH probe are the first tests.
