Hi Brenda, I saw your post responding to my motility questions - thanks! Just wondering how you figured out that Jasmine was 'silent refluxing'. Mallory isn't a 'puker' either but I she is often swallowing, gulping and belching plus she makes these 'grunty' noises like she's annoyed. I used to think that she was just getting bored/irritated/tired/hungry but now I'm starting to notice that the grunty noises increase when she is making the swallowing noises too. She's also super drooly and seems to have difficulty managing it. I think it's harder to diagnose silent reflux so I'm just looking for some symptoms that others noticed/experienced. Thanks!

Hi there, my baby has silent reflux, dx at about 3 months. Its only now looking back that I can say his symtoms because at the time I put everything down to colic and this is what newborn babies do. And because he wasn't being sick I didn't think of reflux. His symptoms were/are grunting, milk in his mouth even a few hours after a bottle, colicky pain, screaming early evening and only I could comfort him (we thought he was playing up), refusing feeds or drinking a few sips, drooling, short daytime sleeps, generally misirable. Hope this helps.............. Julie

Hi Mallory's mom,

That's what Jazz sounded like, lots of gulping, and sometimes chocking/coughing with gunting sounds too. Finally I had an ENT do a scope on her and they saw lots of irritation/redness in her esophagus. I also noticed that Jazz slowly stopped eating and became fussy during feeding. Usually with solids, but slowly with milk too. It isn't so obvious, but there are a few tests that can be done. The scope took all of 5 sec. which was great and it confirmed silent AR. There is also the pH probe which we've done several times. That can really be effective in deterimining how sever her reflux is. I hope this helps some. Oh yeah, also Jazz started to really grind her teeth when she was really reluxing.

Most of those symptoms sounds so familiar.... we got the 'colic' explanation too... and I don't know how many times I've heard 'it will get better'. Personally, I don't believe in colic and I've always known it was something else but trying to get dr's to listen to you is immensely frustrating. In Canada it is very difficult to get any kind of diagnostic testing without severe symptoms. Our DD is gaining weight (very rapidly I might add) because she's always been a comfort eater (she would eat 40-50oz/day when she was only 6-8 weeks old!). She is fussy during feeds which is why we wait until she's tired and ready for sleep. Unfortunately our ped'n has only seen a little bit of the feeding problems and insists she's 'just not interested' (NOT true....). My gut feeding is that we're not on the right doses/combo of meds. Prevacid 15mg/day and zantac 15mg twice per day. What doses did you finally find worked for your babies? Thanks for the support....

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
My daughter was a silent refluxer. I thought it was colic at first but the doctor diagnosed it after a month. Her symtoms were constant fussiness, very little sleep periods, and constipation. We switched to Nutramigen formula and were also on 15mg Prevacid and Zantac.

How long have you been on the Prevacid. It may take a couple weeks to start working. If it doesn't seem to work the doc may up the dose. If she has irritation in her stomach or esophagus she may need a higher dose.

I feel your pain. Once you get the meds and the formula right she should start to feel better.

Hang in there.

We started prevacid compound on Jan 13th but I was pretty sure it wasn't working that well so we switched to solutabs on Feb 9th. Our ped'n also added Zantac on Feb 5th. We JUST started to see an improvement maybe about 1 week ago - we had a happy baby for about TWO days (last weekend) and have been on the downslide again since then. We went back to see the ped'n on Monday due to increase in choking episodes and I asked about the zantac dose being so weight sensitive (because DD is gaining so rapidly) and was told it was a 'good dose'. Well, I just spoke to our pharmacist and she is not even getting the MINIMUM dose!!!! Argh! I know reflux is a constant battle but when you're not even getting the right help.... talk about frustration.

Have you tried Mylanta? That worked best for Katie for pain than anything.

Also, are you giving the prevacid on an empty stomach and spacing the zantac at least an hour from the prevacid?

Hi there.... no we haven't tried mylanta yet. I am afraid to add yet another med due to trying to space and time everything else (we may also have to add motilium). We do try to give the prevacid on an empty stomach (although if she has DGE I'm really not too sure how empty her stomach really is) and we space the zantac at least 2 hours from the prevacid. Julie, what dose of prevacid and zantac did you finally find worked for your baby? Thanks....

We tried everything for reflux before finding Nexium...a godsend for Jazz. We also used Maalox for pain. If your gut says it's not working then go with that. Unfortunately, we had to fight and fight to get Jazzy's reflux under control. Sometimes you have to call and bug your Dr. and not take no for an answer.

I think your baby is about 5 months old(we write dob in the uk the opp way round) your situation sounds similar to ours. I cant give you advice because I am in the same boat as you, I do give you my sympathy though. Reading your post reflux is handled different by different Drs and different countries. Here in the uk there method is not to dx but treat, my Consultant pedi says even with a dx treatment is still different for different kids. They only investigate what they class as dangerous diseases............ not sure what I think about this. You did say that you feed your baby whilst she is sleeping, I do this with my baby and it works well, but now he wont feed whilst awake and my pedi has said that this is now a behavioral thing on top of his reflux. This is not advice I am giving just giving examples of how different Drs and places can vary. I would be interested to know how you get on, Hope things start to improve for you..... please keep posting. Julie

Yes, Mallory is just about 5 months old. We were told the reflux would peak around this time but I didn't know it would be this bad. My baby is MISERABLE (especially in the last week). It is the same here in Canada... trying to get diagnostic testing is near impossible unless you are really 'sick'. Even then it's a long wait. Our current ped'n is so conservative and its taken months just to get this far with her. She likes the 'wait and see' approach and meanwhile we're all suffering. I call almost on a weekly basis but clearly I'm going to have to be more aggressive. This zantac under-dosing makes it very clear to me that I'M going to have to manage this condition by being very informed about everything. How much Zantac is your baby on? Any side effects? Thanks for the support..... we're all in the same boat.

Hi Shawna, I didn't know about the 5 month peak but it is soooo true. Isaac was about 5 months 1 week and like your baby we had a reflux free time, so it hits you twice as hard because you get your hopes high. This is when he was put on to Zantac and domperidne, he had bad tummy cramps which I later found out was from the donperidome. He had only been on them for 2 days when I stopped them. He suffered diarrhea and general unwell, this is when I started to dream feed him. I was at the out of hours doctors last night I was so worried about his diarrhea, not passing water he looked so poorly, they said it was a virus. Because he only takes about 3 to 5 fl oz about 4 times a day I worry about dehdration. They assured me he was ok, and of course Isaac was smiling at the doctor just to make me look like a real ott mum. Well Isaac was 6 months old about yesterday and my ped has always quoted I will see improvements when he is 6 months old, Im scared to get excited but today he has been feeding a little more awake and taking 5 to 6 fl oz 4 times today. So maybe maybe the 6 month thing has some truth in it. I read somewhere that when the stomache muscles get stronger this can help, I have given Isaac as much tummy time that he was comfortable with maybe this helped. I am suppose to have started him back on the zantac and don this weekend but whilst he was poorly I didn't want to, and now he seems to be picking up I dont know what to do. Im so fed up with if's but's and maybe's................... what is your babys sleep pattern like at night? Isaac has always been a good sleeper at night but not in the day. He sleeps at night for a good 7 hours and seems comfortable, almost like he enjoys the break from milk. does your baby cry at the sight of her bottle, Isaac can cry at the bootle 99% of the time and then 1% of the time randomly get excited about it, but then still goes straight to sleep to drink it. I know we are not out of the woods yet but I am going to try to enjoy this break and hope yours comes quickly to. Julie

We are currently feeding Mallory Similac Alimentum. I have pushed for a change to Neocate but our ped'n doesn't seem to think it's necessary. I think I might just try and obtain the neocate on my own and try it anyway. I am afraid of the tummy cramps with the domperidone... it's so hard to determine what are side effects and what are reflux symptoms. Mallory's sleep patterns were really good for a while (we even had a few 12 hour nights!). But gradually she is waking sooner and more frequently. It takes us about 2 hours to get her put to bed and the last few nights she has woken 1/2 to 1 hour after requiring rocking back to sleep. Then she may wake 1-2 times more but at times it takes 1-2 hours to get her back to sleep. Daytime sleep is not great. She takes about 3-4 catnaps only about 1/2 hour each time during the day. So, of course, that adds to the irritability. She doesn't cry at the sight of the bottle - in fact she'll 'grab' for it but if she's awake she'll twist and claw at the bottle, latch and unlatch, do what I call 'the bends' which is where she strains forward as if trying to sit up. It is awful so we usually feed her when she is very sleepy. Unfortunately what our ped'n has witnessed she just thinks is baby 'not being interested' in the bottle. It is very discouraging, for me anyway, to hear the pediatrician say 'it will get better' or 'she's not really that sick' when you have to live with a miserable baby. You know when things aren't working for your baby and I, personally, won't accept the 'live with it' answer. Please keep posting about Isaac's progress.... it will give me and others hope!

I think we are still on the right track, not as good as yesterday though. I think because the diarrhea has slowed down the milk is not moving through so quick. So my next step is to restart the zantac tomorrow and a few days later the domperidone. We are not meant to have peace in our house, I had to take my 2 yr old for a check up after a bad cold, had not given it much thought, anyway it turns out that she has got to have a ECG scan as her heart drops beats, I feel so tired and can't think straight anymore. Hope I don't have to long for the ECG as everything seems to be exaggerated at the moment. Good and bad day. How has your little one been today.

We had a better day today (despite having hiccups 6 times....). Miss Mallory was in a much better mood which has me convinced that the zantac is now working again. I just hope and pray this continues. That's terrible that you have to deal with two sick children! (I truly didn't know how strong you had to be to be a Mommy until now). Keep us posted on how your kids are doing! S

GREAT..... you had a good day, hope you have had another today. I think hiccups remove gas or is this an old wives tale. You mentioned zantac working now how was Mallory on this the first few days ? I have started Isaac on this again and he is showing discomfort, not badly.Im confused about his meds, I added another post today. He is still showing improvment so overall a good day. I took my 2 year old to have her ECG today not sure when I will get the results or maybe she will have to have it done again as she kicked up a right fuss.
