Mother of 4 children. 3 girls, youngest baby boy 30/08/08. Dx silent reflux at 3 months. On Gaviscon and just trying zantac and domperidone. Thought Isaac was finished with reflux at 5 months, had a couple of weeks free it then came back with a vengeance...........
Domperidone any info Please
Hello everyone, I am new to this site. I live in England and we only get to see a GP really, and they admit they dont understand baby reflux. Iwondered if anyone could tell me anything about Domperidone as my 6 month old baby was prescribed peridome and zantac (he is already on Gaviscon). I only gave it to him for 2 days as he got tummy cramps. Maybe I should have given it longer....... Maybe I was right to stop it right away........ maybe maybe maybe......

Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
Welcome to Pager. You will get lots of info from the ladies on here. I have no personal experience with the domperidone. I just read about it and it looks like it is to help with motility. Kind of seems like a Reglan type drug but I really don't know. If that it what it is for it could be causing stomach cramps because it is helping the stomach get moving and digest the food quicker so the stomach isn't as full and the child won't reflux and vomit as much. Was vomitting a major problem? Did they do any tests before determining that your lo needed that many drugs? Sometimes Zantac is enough for children, with the right dosage. Sometimes it takes more than one drug to help these kiddos. Everyone is different. I think it would be beneficial to have a barium swallow done. This will tell you if everything from his mouth to his tummy is working correctly. If he is emptying late it might be able to tell you.

Others on here probably have a little more experience and since this isn't a drug that I am familiar with then I'm not sure I am even on the right track. Welcome though! -Amanda

Thankyou so much Amanda for your reply. I didnt really explain myself very well. Isaac was diagnosed with silent reflux aged 2 months by a GP his symtoms were refusing to feed, uncomfortable and 1 or 2 screaming pains a day but not constant, sleeping good at night but just naps in the day. Doc gave gaviscon to mix with every feed. At 5 months old he started to drink well 4 x 7fl oz a day I thought he was cured. Then bang all of a sudden he was worse than b4. He refuses to feed, little and often makes him worse. I took him back to doc who prescribed zantac and domperidome to take 3 times a day b4 feeds.I understand from looking on the internet that taken together zantac cancels out domperidome. Basicaly I wasn't given enough info of how long it will take to work, side effects etc etc. With out this knowledge I feel to scared to give him the meds, also I have a nagging feeling has he had the right diagnoses. I hope I have made myself a little clearer, I dont feel like I can think straight. By the way at the moment I am having to dream feed him. Julie xx

Okay, that helps me process a little more. It is fine about your first post. We are all a little (or alot) sleep deprived around here. I can see why you are leary of giving him the meds with no more info than you have been given.

Here are a few more questions and some things to think about. Is he formula or BF? If either it could be an allergy issue. It sounds like he does have some reflux problems but it could be due to allergies also. Have you introduced anything else new? Rice or Oat cereal? Anything? Yes, giving the Zantac with some other will cancel its effectiveness. Since you went straight from non prescription gaviscon to two different meds the one Zantac may be worth trying alone. Give it to him 30 minutes or so before feeds. It took Adriane a good 2 weeks or maybe more before we saw any difference and even then she needed additional meds.

That is just my humble opinion and you might want to discuss it with your gp or if they can get you to a specialist that would be even better. We are here when you need us. -Amanda

Thankyou so much I am really really thankful, you look like you have your hands full with your own little sweetie. Isaac goes to nursery in the afternoon as I go to work. I told the nursery that I had given him some baby rice and for them to give him some after his milk................. when I picked him up they told me they had given him 12 spoons full and he had enjoyed it. I knew this was way too much but they done it with the best intention. The next day Isaac was poorly, he was a tiny bit sick and even had a temp. That was the start of going backwards. Its interesting though I never thought of allergies. Its so hard here to get app for anything but I will start by going to the doctors tomorrow. I was trying to press on with rice and cereal giving him 2 small spoonsful a day. If he had an allergie do you know how long it would stay in his system.............. Thanks Amanda

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
Hi there. It seems to me that the kids that are on a reglan type drug have had some sort of test that shows that they have delayed emptying. Maybe the Domperidone is bothering him if he really doesn't have that issue.

I agree with the pp. I would start with giving the Zantac regularly and at least 30 min. before meals and see how that works for him (may take about two weeks).

If he still has issues he may need a PPI like prevacid.

Maybe hold off on the rice until his reflux is under control????

I seen a pedi in dec and their att on it is so long as he is gaining weight and not dehydrated every thing is fine.... but really its not. Some days he will take only 6fl oz on a good day he takes 16fl oz a day. I know I am lucky compared to some poor little ones on this site. I actually feel like I am getting some where just by recieving posts on here...... big thanks
