My 3 month old has been diagnosed with Acid Reflux and is on Prevacid and Nutramigen. She has always vomited (a lot) after her feedings and I was told this is part of the reflux. What I'm now wondering about is that she throws up all day long. It doesn't matter how long it has been since she ate she is still vomiting. We feed her every three hours with rice cereal thickened feedings and she'll vomit for the next 3 hours even while we are preparing her NEXT bottle!! Is this normal with Acid Reflux or could something else be going on here? What she is vomiting is like watered down milk or skim milk in color and texture. We are finally getting in to see a pediatric GI but the closest one is going to take us 10 hours to drive there and that won't be fun with a vomiting baby! Thanks so much for your help, I don't mind all the laundry but enough already!

I am new to this board and have a 3 month old refluxer myself. I would try Alimentum ready to feed. Alimentum ready to feed doesn't have corn like the Alimentum powder and Nutrimigen. Some babies tolerate it better. Mine does better on that but is still having some problems. I am going to ask my doc about an elemental formula next. I would also ask your doc about a gastric emptying scan to see how long it takes her to empty her stomach contes. Could be she could do well with Reglan or Erythromycin which speeds up the emptying process. Just some things to ask the doc. My boy is on Reglan and Prevacid right now and things still aren't right so sometimes it just takes time to find the right combo of things. Good luck. It is haard. How is her weight gain?

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
Hi there and I'm sorry you have to deal with this. If my hunch is right, then welcome to the wonderful world of DGE. Delayed Gastric Emptying. The tummy empties slower than it should leaving her with food in her gut much longer than the average kid. There is a scan they can do to determine this, but in our case, they put us on a motility drug (to speed up the tummy) and we saw improvement very quickly. Z still pukes immediately after eating, but not after three hours anymore. Where do you live? Really?? 10 hours to a GI? Yikes! I'm so sorry. Another thing is that adding rice cereal to my son's bottle was hard on his tummy and the tummy takes EVEN longer to digest cereal. Did you see any difference in the vomiting with the cereal? Less volume perhaps? If not, I would discontinue it. They make products called Simply Thick and Thick it that are easier onthe tummy and do the same thing. Lastly, what formula is she on? There could be allergy issues involved, too. Perhaps to lactose or soy. My son is now on Elecare (a corn based hypoallergenic formula), but still pukes up a storm...I work very hard to get weight on him. MOST kids outgrow this between 6 mo and a year (no luyck for us...we are at 17 months), so I hope you wont have to deal with this long!!!

Have you investigated the possibility of pyloric stenosis?

Thank you so much for your answers. I'll have to look up DGE sounds like that could be the issue. She is currently on Nutramigen formula and we might try the Simply Thick instead of rice cereal. Also, she was checked for Pyloric Stenosis and it came back negative. Thanks again!

Hi & Welcome. Long story short: my son was diagnosed with reflux & pyloric stenosis. The truth is that it was mostly a milk/soy allergy. Just be aware that this could be an issue also. Good Luck, hope you find your answers soon. Ellen
