Amby Bed
There was a thread a while ago about sleep solutions and I wanted to update. That thread made me unpack the Amby from under the bed where it has lived the last 2 months and just for giggles I put Isobel in it last night after her 10 pm feed. I didn't hear from her again until 6 this morning!! 7 whole hours!!! (I count from when her butt hits the mattress) Yay! So thanks for the thread, it made me think about it again.

It was great for me but bad for her really. She's only taking 2-3 oz of elecare at a time but won't eat more frequently. As soon as she starts to feed her nose and chest get wheezy and congested, but between feeds she sounds clear. GI has ordered a barium swallow to check it out. I'm wondering if it could be allergy reaction. What do you ladies think? We're going today to do the draw for RAST testing but I'm wondering how accurate it could possibly be on a 5 month old? Any thoughts or ideas are most welcome.

Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
Adriane had RAST done about that age. Everything was negative but we knew better because of reaction. It very possibly could be allergy related. Is she bf or formula? If it is formula you might just try a hypoallergenic formula if she isn't on one already. Adriane still had some allergy issues even on Neocate. They had thought that she was aspirating but after her swallow test at 5 or 6 weeks old they ruled it out forever! Now, That was a little sarcastic because I think just because they didn't aspirate at 5 weeks doesn't mean that she never did.

I think you are on the right track though. I think if you do the RAST you might get good results and you might get false negatives. DO the swallow test and see what that says. If the swallow looks good then it is probably allergy related.

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
the rast testing is notoriously unreliable. I'm surprised theya re even doing it. That said, she is already on Elecare, so unless she is allergic to corn or sunflower oil that's pretty hypoallergenic. It's possible, however...have you already tried a Nutramagen or Allimentium? they are lactose or soy based, but if her allergy is corn they might help! How many oz do you think she's getting in per day? Wow she sounds like Zack at that age. I was tearing my hair out.

Sara, Mom to Isobel 10/01/08 Dx Silent reflux @ 6 wks. Prevacid 22.5mg split in 2 doses. Pepcid .5ml twice a day. Diagnostically confirmed milk protein, egg and cat allergy. Suspected corn, pea and squash allergy. Trialed Alimentum and Elecare without success, currently on Isomil Advance RTF with moderate success. Barium Swallow and UGI 3/08 Pondering a ph probe and endoscopy.
She's gone from eating 30-35 oz a day (2 1/2 weeks ago) to eating 16-20 oz a day. GI suggested mixing vanilla and unflavored elecare which we have started doing. I tried to give her pedialyte but she made the same wheezy congested noises. Of course, pedialyte contains dextrose.... So I wondered..... And just a few minutes ago I gave her 2 oz of water and whaddaya know- no wheezing. RAST testing, my &@?!!!

The only reason I'm allowing the rast is to appear like a good compliant mom/patient. I am excited (well, you KWIM ) about the swallow. It would be nice to confirm that she's structurally sound and swallowing correctly.

Any tricks for getting a congested baby to eat? It's in her sinuses and lungs.

Alimentum= instant blood in stool. Haven't tried anything but Alimentum and Elecare. I am going to ask GI about Ultracare for kids on our next visit.

It is my understanding that alimentum powder contains corn but the ready to feed version of alimentum does not. Elecare contains corn products also. Just a thought in case corn might be problem for your little one.

FYI, the ultracare is not intended to be used as an infant formula. It is to be used more like a supplement for children.

Warning: Not intended as an infant formula. Do not use as a sole source of nutrition.

10 oz. of it provide more Vitamin A than a child under 4 should consume in a day-definitely not for infants!!!!

I know about the RTF alimentum, but I am too afraid to try it again ( we did 3 days of that and 2 days of powder and got blood. I also realize ultracare isn't nutritionally complete, but I plan to talk to the GI about it to see if it would be suitable with additional supplementation. It's such a guessing game with allergies and formula! I just hate that she's so miserable!!

Is there another food you all would suggest? She's allergic to milk protein and we think soy and we're starting to suspect corn. We are waiting until after the testing comes back before we change formulas again but we were thinking of trying something soy to rule out or in as an allergen.

Have you tried neocate? Sometimes just trying a different formula helps, though they are both elemental formulas the are some subtle differences in ingredients/levels.Brent was allergic to neocate, but is halfway tolerating the elecare, and we have tried every formula with no better success. I will tell you that if there is a suspicion of a rice allergy steer clear of the ultracare because that is what it is made of. Good luck!
