Molly 7/10/07 the reason I'm here!
can I give juice with prilosec?
Molly was just switched to prilosec by her GI dr. I know it has to be given 30 mins before eating, which shouldn't be a problem because she doesn't like to eat breakfast when she first wakes. But, she usually drinks a cup of rice milk and watches t.v. for about 30 minutes in the morning. Would it be o.k. to give her a cup of watered-down juice (about 1 oz. juice 3 oz water) right after the prilosec? Being a saturday night, I can't call the gi's office until monday to ask, so I was hoping someone would have an answer for me tonight so I can start her on it tomorrow morning. She really doesn't like plain water, and is very used to her morning routine of having a drink and asks for it immediately when she wakes up. Thanks for any help or advice you can give.

JMHO but I wouldn't. In order for a PPI to be MOST affective it needs an empty stomach. Basically the PPI needs contact with those receptors to stop the production of acid.

Sorry. again, JMHO and what we always did with Jedd.

Wow, thanks for replying so quickly! How about plain water? Do you think that would effect it, too?

IDK it might dilute the Prilosec. Our GI always wanted it on an empty stomach. You can always try it with water and see if she still seems to be the save GERD wise.

I would be more inclined to try it with water IF the GERD is under control.

in the beginning when Jedd was in major pain, I wanted to make sure it was completely empty. I wanted NOTHING to interfere with that med at all.

thanks again! I think I am going to wait until I call the gi to start it because I also have a question about her dosage. I have read (both on here before, and tonight doing research) that it is best to give it 2 times daily, but Molly's says 10mL once daily. Also, from what I was reading, I think she was prescribed an adult dose. The print-out I have from CHOP and the bottle say it is 10mL=20 mg. Does that sound too high? I know no one can give me medical advice, but I am just wondering if that sounds right. She was 28 lbs. 7 oz. This was our first visit to a gi. Molly's symptoms were being controlled by zantac and a limited diet, but she seemed to be getting a little worse lately so we finally went to see a gi. It was at CHOP, which I think is supposed to be a really good children's hospital. The dr. wants her to have an EGD with biopsies done in the next 4-6 weeks. She said the scheduling office will call me within the next few days to schedule it, but she wants her to try the prilosec in the meantime.

Kathryn, Pager Volunteer and mommy to Emily Mia 02/04/07. 3 years old with GERD. 30mg Prevacid and Pepcid AC. Mylanta needed for flares. Failed prilosec med switch. Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
i have always given emily a cup of sugar free lemonade after her prevacid, she takes a few sips and watches a show then it's time for breakfast a half hour later. i honestly do not think this leaves the med ineffective. The GI has said this is okay b/c it is not digesting. BUT she also refluxes on her meds so wether it has anything to do with her water in the morning, i don't know...

The dosage sounds right to me, I would split it and give her 5 ml in the morning and 5 ml at night, kids generally metabolize it faster and by splitting you create a more constant dose of the med in the system.

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
Maybe you could just give it a try to break the routine a little. Put her in front of the TV and give her the medicine witha little sip of water. Tell her a big funny story about how the medicine has to go all the way down to her belly and play, and then she can have juice. So after one show she can have her juice.

That's what I do with Katie. SHe always asks me if the medicine is in her tummy yet.

Like Jessica said, I'd break up the dose for sure. Jedd took 5ml twice a day when he weight about 20lbs. HIGH I know but he proved he needed it that high. We had done a pH study on his gastric juices...LOL I know, gastric juice. It proved that he had a high level of acid in his gastric contents.

He had to fast from mid night on and around 9:00 the lab at our hospital had me draw back some fluid from his G tube for testing. his came back as a 3.

Keep in mind that it was at a 3 after giving his morning meds. which I had been told to do....acidic for sure.

I don't think you can do a Ph study unless you have a tube. Sorry. One of the advantages.

After we did that we were allowed to up the dose a bit for his weight.

Molly 7/10/07 the reason I'm here!
Thank you so much everyone! I haven't started her on the med yet because she got the virus my older two children have/had, so she has been running a really high fever, and won't eat anything. But, I am going to try telling her the story about the medicine going into her belly when I start it. She is only 19 months, but she is very verbal and bright so it might work. Of course she is also super stubborn so it might not, lol! I should have asked the dr all of these questions, but once she said she wanted to do the EGD, and that she suspects EE, I started to panic and wasn't really thinking straight. Thanks again!
