Gail - mom to a six year old with reflux and an infant with reflux
Eosinophillic Disorder
Is an endoscopic procedure of the esophagus and upper stomach the best test for eosinophillic disorders? My six year old is having an endoscopic procedure tomorrow and the gi said that he would be taking multiple tissue samples to look for inflammation and signs of eosinophills. Can signs of eosinophills be seen by the docs naked eye or do we have to wait for results? He can no longer swallow a pill and is becoming more selective about the foods that he will eat because of his swallowing. Just wondering.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site:
An EDG can look clear to the naked eye but show up on the tissue samples. Unless I'm mistaken it won't catch all EE disorders. Some of them required colon samples I think like EC. Jessica can correct me on that one...LOL

I pray the procedure goes well. Ours was quick so don't go any where, ya know like to the cafe' to get food. You won't make it...

Endoscopy is the only test to diagnose eosinophilic disorders, there is no other test. There can be visual signs of EE like rings and furrows, white patches, but the biopsy is the only way to know for sure. A normal looking esophagus can also still have severe eosinophilic infiltration come back on biopsy. There needs to be 5 to 6 biopsy samples taken from both the distal and proximal esophagus for accurate diagnosis. Upper endoscopy can diagnose eosinophilic esophagitis, eosinophilic gastritis, eosiophilic gastroenteritis, a colonoscopy would be needed for diagnosis of things like eosinophilic enteritis,or eosinophilic colitis. Since your sons issues are esophageal related, this should be fine. Good Luck!

All the info. is helpful. GI said that upon just looking at the esophagus and upper stomach everything looks good. The biopsy results are supposed to be back Friday. The procedure went as planned except staff had to give iv benadryl in the OR because his hives became so red and angry. He always breaks out if he missed his am antihistamines. I can't wait for Friday - hoping for answers as always.
