Mom to Matthew, 01/16/08, GERD baby, has been on Zantac since 2 mos. Aidan, his twin brother, no GERD. Max-ed out on Zantac at 1ml-3 times/day, and switched to Prevacid 15mg split tab 08/20/08. Switched again to 20mg Prilosec 09/18/08 due to Prevacid's restlessness/headache side effects. Reflux was out of control again and had to switch to 10mg Nexium 02/11/09. Good result so far.
slimfast13 - advice on pre/probiotics
Could you pls give me some advice in term of using Prothera's pre/probiotics? I've been using the OTC children probiotics and really want to use the Prothera's that you recommended a while ago. Could you pls tell me which pre/probiotics and the dosage that you use? I asked the pedi and GI docs about the patient authorization code but they said it's not necessary and didn't give it to me. I believe probiotics does help my son and will try to push the pedi/GI again for the code. I went on the Prothera website. How do doctors obtain the code? Do they go on the website and register first to get the code? I wanted to explain the process to them in details and print out the specific pre/probiotics product guide to show the docs at the next visit. Do you think retail pharmacy can get the code too? Thanks a lot for your advice.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Any medical professional can get an auth code, so you can ask a pharmacist, nurse, MD, etc to get one. Heck, if you're related or friends with one, they can get it for you. Our ped is just wonderful enough to believe that not everything is helped through only pharmaceuticals, so she recommended them and has an auth code (our GE didn't understand either, but haven't fought us.) To get a code all they need to do is register. No cost to them.

We started on the Ther-Biotic Infant formula at 3 months old, but I asked our ped if I could just empty one adult capsule into her food instead, and she said that was fine. I think Allie was about 9 months at that point. So we use one adult capsule of their Vital 10 per day. We also use one Biotagen capsule (prebiotics) for a few days at a time when Allie's constipation issues rear up again, but we don't use them all the time.

If you like, I have the latest order forms and catalog (but I do everything online), so you can email me your address and I can send them along to you. slimfast13@hotmail.com

Many docs don't believe in using complimentary or alternative medicine, but as most of the docs I've mentioned it to (including my dog's VET!!) are very positive about them, especially since they've not been shown to do any harm, even if they don't help. I'd ask your docs why they don't want to try this, and not that it's not "necessary." If there's a particular reason, it's your right to know it. You've already been using them, so is there a reason they're against it?

I definitely say I've seen a difference in my dd's reflux since starting these, and we notice the days that we forget to give them to her. HTH!

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
Yeah it is strange. I really wanted to put Katie on probiotics and my GI said no. She said she doesn't believe in messing with a person's natural flora. I didn't say anything but I wondered, well what if a person's natural flora stinks!

I just checked the website and you can request a catalog yourself, but if it doesn't work, I can still send you the ones I have.

Hi Meghann, I'll send you an email from Gmail shortly. I'll have the well-check appt with the ped next Wed so the the catalogue if requested online might not come in time. I think the pedi doesn't think it can do any harm but doesn't think it benefits either and then doesn't want to go to the trouble of getting the code. I will make the request again next Wed. I already asked my sister in law who is a nurse practitioner studying in med school and she also doesn't believe in it. Sigh... I might try to ask other friends, nurse/pharmacist for help. Thanks so much.

I've applied for an auth code, so if I get one, and your docs don't give you any reason NOT to do it, I can give it to you.

I'll email you the print form of the catalog and patient handouts.

Check with your
doctor first!
