Reflux babies & illness
As most of you know our kiddos have had more than their share of illness. We are all commenting about how our los seem to get sick more than most. As most of you know Adriane has been fighting a viral infection or several since Thanksgiving. Fever up and down, cough (off and on), and feeling good to feeling terrible and not eating all over the past 3 months or so. She isn't miserable all the time but everytime we take her in the doc swabs her throat for strep. I finally asked why her viral infections always settle in her throat and then move to her chest. Finally an explaination!

Our ped said that she sees this more often in reflux kiddos. She said that the redness is on the throat but not the part that is from the reflux. It is on the tonsil sides, reflux is generally seen on the back and on the uvula (the punching bag thing). She said that there has been some indication if their reflux isn't completely controlled then it compromises the immune system in the throat and allows the virus to settle in the throat. Another doc (more of a holistic doc) told me that the good flora in her throat can't survive because of the relfux. Either way it makes sense.

As far as what to do about it. Well, we have found the best med combo for her Nexium and Zantac and we are still dealing with the effects and the breakthrough pain with maalox. So, we can't do anything more but to treat the symptoms. I think we are on the downhill side of this virus, fever broke on its own today and she is finally eating and drinking again.

On a different topic she has her ped opthamologist appt today to see about her left eye turning in. Hopefully we will get some answers. I am hoping it is muscular and not related to her seizures. It would be easier to fix and not quite as scary!

Sara, Mom to Isobel 10/01/08 Dx Silent reflux @ 6 wks. Prevacid 22.5mg split in 2 doses. Pepcid .5ml twice a day. Diagnostically confirmed milk protein, egg and cat allergy. Suspected corn, pea and squash allergy. Trialed Alimentum and Elecare without success, currently on Isomil Advance RTF with moderate success. Barium Swallow and UGI 3/08 Pondering a ph probe and endoscopy.
Good luck at the opth. I'll keep my fingers crossed that all she needs is a patch (which btw is a great canvas for drawings or stickers- I say if you have to wear a patch, make it FUN!).

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
My GI told me the same thing on Friday. She said that research is showing the reflux is the culprit for all the sinus and ear infections.

we have had this for the past month. emily has felt the same way. she has had 3 swabs for strep and 1 swap for flu and all have come back negative. i have told the pedi i really don't think her reflux is controlled and he said there is nothing he can do about it to talk to the GI the GI won't do anything b/c he says her reflux is controlled through prevacid. ugh!

i am glad A is feeling better and i really hope your appointment goes well!

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
I'd ask about probiotics to help the gut flora - sometimes it really makes a difference, especially since a good portion of immuity comes from the GI tract. My dd has only been ill once - she's been on probiotics since 4 months old. Now I've probably jinxed myself.....
