Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
Help! Doc switched me to Nexium packets.
Has anyone used the Nexium packets? I am so depressed. Katie was doing so so well on prevacid 45mg of solutaves. She was taking 15mg in the morning and 30 mg before dinner. SHe has been doing so well.

Now my insurance has changed and it is $400 to get the two tablets a day for a 30 days supply.

SO the doctor suggested we try Nexium. She said that 30 mg of Nexium would be equivalent to the 45mg of prevacid solutabs that Katie has been taking.

Only thing is that Nexium only comes in 40 mg packets. So they want me to mix the packet with water in the morning and give her 1/4 of it in am and then give her 1/2 of it in the evening and toss the rest.

DOes this sound even remotely sane???? Sounds like a science project.

Anyone use the Nexium packets??? ANy advice at all???

Brent uses them. It gonna be hard to do that in terms of exact measurement. suggestions: just give her the whole packet if you get enough per month,it wont hurt her.To do that just mix it up in a large syringe and give half in the morning and half at night, put it in the fridge immediately after mixing(per pharmacist).Suggestion num 2: Nexium also comes in 20 mg packets, give her the whole acket, then half the other pack, mix it up then dump half..HTH

Nexium Delayed Release Oral Suspension packets come in 10,20, and 40 mg packets. You could just do 3 of the 10 mg packets a day!!! I didnt know it came in 10 mg until I just looked it up.

Also mom to Nathan. born Jan.20th, 2009, MPI . so far dx with reflux and has an extremely sensitibe GI system. Also dx with primary immune deficiency disease.
We've been doing 10 mg in the a/m and p/m and it has been GREAT!!! Seriously nothing has worked better. We also dilute in 10 ml's of water and give it to her in a syringe. It tastes good too which helps a lot!! HTH

My insurance is so screwed up. It would cost me three times as much to get 3 packs of 10 mg. It is making me crazy!!! So my ONLY option is to get the 40mg. They charge by the number of pills or the number of packets - not the mg.

SO my only option is to somehow split the 40mg packet.

So you think it would be O.K. to use the whole packet? That does help. I didn't know that I could keep it in the fridge for the day until the second dose. That helps alot.

My pharmacist was telling me to get a super sensitive scale and measure out the granules into 10mg sections. THat is just too crazy for me.

One pharmacist also said that you couldn't keep the solution all day but if it works for you, I will go with that. BTW the GI suggested mixing it all and keeping it until the next dose although never mentioned refrigerating it.

Thanks so much. I hope she does as well on Nexium as she did on Prevacid.

Brent used to be on 60 mg prevacid per day, and we switched over to the 40 mg nexium, and he is only 2, that is why I think the whole packet would be fine. I didnt even think about the having to use 3 packs a day with the 10 mg, insurance wise sorry.

Our GI had a lot of samples you may want to check and see if yours can help you out by giving you some of the 10mg samples. I actually have some of those right now and it is way easier. We had the same issue with prevacid. The 30 mg tablets are the same price as the same quantity of 15 mg tablets. Makes no sense!!

But, please don't give extra meds, as was suggested, without talking with your DR!! It can hurt to give more than the recommended dose and most of these things go by both weight AND age. KWIM? Only your Dr has Katie's Hx and can make that call. :)

I really hope the Nexium will work for her and I am really sorry you were forced to change from something that was working. :(

40 mg packets..mix up whole packet with 15 ml water draw out in syring and shake it up good, squirt out

40/15=2.7 rounded to tenth. 2.7 mg in each ml. 30/2.7 is 11.1 She would need 11.1 ml to get 30 mg per day, dump the rest, refrigerate.give 5.5 ml in the morning and 5.6 ml at night.

This is assuming that the total mixed volume is 15 ml, if it is more after you mix the packet with the 15 ml, just redo the math, switching out the 15 for 16, or 17, kwim?

The above was for the 30 mg a day dose. Many dr.s dont have monthly supplies of nexium prescriptions to give away, but that is worth a shot. If you have a prob still, check to see if you can go up to the 40 dose. Brent was one and about 22 lbs when he was on that dose. And much of the time weight or age isnt much of a factor in the dosing of PPI's as stated above, it is the severity of issues/damage. That is why you see 5 month olds taking 30 mg just like an adult,20 lb one year olds taking the same dose as 65 pound 9 year old, there is obvious age and weight discrepencies there lol...but you should check with your dr to be on the safe side, that is correct.HTH

I requested samples and apparently the drug companies don't give out samples any more or my doctor just didn't want to give me any.....whatever. I am fed up with the crazyness of the insurance companies.....I wonder if the person making these decisions ever had a baby with GERD and damage on her insides.

Oh well.

Thank you so much for the solution info with my packet. Seems easy enough. I will run it by the doc to see about the whole packet.

Thanks so much for the support.

Renee, mother to Nicholas, born 4/18/08 with silent reflux, moderate laryngomalacia, Sandifer's Syndrome& suspected MSPI. On Neocate, Simply Thick and Prevacid. Also mother to Nathan, born 12/06/06, who had mild reflux the first few months.
It's good to know the Nexium has worked well for others. Nathan started Prevacid with samples from the doc. Our pharmacist says it would be $180 for one months supply. Not as bad as $400, but still out of our budget!
