Mom to Matthew, 01/16/08, GERD baby, has been on Zantac since 2 mos. Aidan, his twin brother, no GERD. Max-ed out on Zantac at 1ml-3 times/day, and switched to Prevacid 15mg split tab 08/20/08. Switched again to 20mg Prilosec 09/18/08 due to Prevacid's restlessness/headache side effects. Reflux was out of control again and had to switch to 10mg Nexium 02/11/09. Good result so far.
Could you pls share your experience using Nexium?
Prilosec plus Reglan do not seem to help much for Matthew. He's still irritable after meals, vomits and screams several times during the night. I was told that Nexium suspension will be the next. Could you pls share your DS/DD experience with Nexium if you have? Which form (liquid/tablet) do you use? Has Nexium helped your DS/DD? What dosage was prescribed? Have you tried other meds (Prevacid/Prilosec/Reglan/ect.) before? My son was on Prevacid but he had side effect: headache, restlessness, etc. The GI nurse practitioner had first told me that Nexium was not used for Matthew's age (12 months old) and then later told me that we could try Nexium suspension but she "doesn't guarantee it would work". I lost trust in this nurse and will bring Matthew in to see a GI doctor next Monday. If you could share your experience with Nexium I much appreciated. Thanks a lot.

(Maria)Mommy of 2 beautiful boys
Raymond(3) Severe Trachialmalasia, very mild Cerebral Palsy, and Reflux. Currently only unsing neb and doing well w/o Prevacid!
William(2) Reflux, MSPI, severe food/seasonal/environmental allergies. Currently on Prevacid, Zyrtec, and very limited diet.
Picture:William just turned 2!
Will 2yr old
Nexium in my opinion is a Godsend! I currently take it and my son Will took it for awhile. He was around 12mos at the time as well. He was on a liquid that the pharmacy had to mix up. It worked so well. He slept better, and seemed to suffer less from the burning. We also had to thicken his formula with rice cereal to almost a pudding consistancy. Between those 2, he was a happy lil guy. The bad part....like you said, Nexium isn't targeted for infants...it can be modified, but thats not how its suppose to be distributed. So our insurance wouldn't cover it. :o( Which is the reason my little guy is back on Prevacid. If you go to purplepill.com you can apply for a card through them that gives you a discount in addition to whatever your insurance will cover. Its expensive, but it works. Nexium is also great because it helps heal the damage already done by the darn acids.

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
can I ask how long you were on the Prilosec/ Reglan combo? It took a few weeks for us to see an improvement on the reglan. Zack still vomits, but the occurences are more rare (twice a day instead of 7 times a day) and the volume is much less! It's not a "godsend", but it's a lot better. Anyway, I hope you have success with Nexxium if you try it!

My previous drivers license was also stolen. The new one has extra security features on it.
For myself, Nexium was amazing and not only prevented damage, but also healed me on the inside.

For Meggy, not sure we really ever got enough into her to have an accurate detail.

Matthew has been on Prilosec/Reglan combo for 2 days. The nurse practitioner said to wait a week. We'll continue with this combo until seeing the GI next Monday. Thanks so much for your feedback and the discount card tip.

you may want to give the reglan a good month...unless you are seeing adverse side effects...two days would do nothing. I hope something works!!!

Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
Adriane was on prevacid and reglan and now she is doing zantac and nexium. I agree with the pp that if your lo hasn't been on the combo for too long it may take a little while longer. It does sound like the prilosec may not be working but beware of the side affects of reglan also. I am just thinking of the irritability. Adriane was horrible while on Reglan and we finally took her off of it when it made her epilepsy episodes worse. That isn't to say that it causes seizures for everyone because she already had seizure activity.

We are using Nexium capsules. They don't dissolve really well in water but well enough. She takes half a capsule a day combined with her zantac 4ml 2x per day. This was the magic combo for us. You have to be careful when to give them but it works for us. Our insurance doesn't pay alot of ours so it is much more expensive than some of the other meds that we have tried but it is what works for her so we do it. I hope you can figure something out. -Amanda

Connective Tissue Disorder,
GERD,EGID,
Visceral Hyperalgesia, and more
Many meds

I would give it a little longer, because he hasnt been on the prilosec/reglan very long yet.I was told at least 2 weeks to see improvement. 2 days isnt long enough to tell anything.

Three of my kids are on Nexium because other PPI's failed, and Christian is on Prevacid/Reglan(he has colonic dysmotility, and not as much of a severe issue with reflux as the others, he takes a lot of other meds for the lower GI tract ).

Brent takes the packets,Trey and Lauren take the capsules.. Brent and Lauren do twice daily Zantac in addition to the Nexium, Trey does occasionally, and some Mylanta as needed. It works better than the others, but does not provide complete relief for my kids, but has prevented severe esophageal and stomach damage that they had before

Brent has been on Nexium since he was just over a year of age as well. He takes 40 mg, he takes it twice daily, plus 150 mg zantac per day, plus Erythromycin and Baclofen for motility(he did Reglan a long time with no relief).Lauren and Trey take 40 mg as well but in capsule form, Lauren also does 300 mg of Zantac per day and Reglan(4 ml 4 times a day),Trey does Erythromycin,Zantac prn. Confusing enough??lol..It confuses me keeping up with all this mess, between all them in total they take 36 medicines!

What dose are they putting him on if they start him? What Reglan dose(mg/ml) is he on, we always had to start out as a lower dose and titrate up,your son may not be at his target dose yet. Honestly I would hold out at least 2 weeks on the reglan before giving up on it

Matthew is on 1.8ML Reglan 4 times/a day. He is so drowsy today and still throws up food. I'll give it some more time. They haven't told about the Nexium dose yet. Thank you so much ladies for your helpful feedback.

Nexium experience
Hi, We tried the NExium granuales for our 5 month old and he ended up with severe stomach pain crying worse than he did from the GERD. The pediatrician said that after a couple days of the stuff that is a side effect and immediately took him off of the stuff as this is considered a severe reaction. Be on the look out for the reaction and follow your instincts. The dosage for children has not been FDA approved from what I understand for very long and children and adults alike have trouble with the stomach cramping. It is basically glorified Pepcid and insurance companies like it better than Prevacid because its cheaper. Hope your little one is better. Have they considered Pyloric Stenosis? or done a scope/ultrasound on him?
