Picture: This is what happens when you raise a kid on health food and they get ahold of a Coke! Bad mom, that soda is NOT on the reflux diet.
UPDATE: Isaiah is now 12 and off meds! He is doing great, eating again and hopefully will be catching up in the growing department. I am still in the "hoping it sticks" phase, but we're so happy that he's better!
Trying a med wean
Well, here we are 13 months after being dx'd with reflux. Hubby and I went the rounds over the medication issue, but in the last few weeks Isaiah has been doing much better (I hate saying that because every time I do he ends up having a flare up...but it's true). He has been eating much more than usual and has grown a bit! And we've had a pretty quiet and reflux free time for nearly a month. Sooo, since his rx for Prevacid has to be refilled again and since he is doing better, we're going to try stepping down to OTC Prilosec for awhile, and then if that works we'll try cutting down on that, too. Do you think it's crazy? I would have preferred to have had a few more good months on the meds first, but I guess we'll know soon enough if this isn't going to work. Prayers are appreciated! I will hate it if things go downhill, since he's doing so well...but I also hate the thought that's in the back of my mind all the time that he's not absorbing calcium etc. because of the Prevacid. Sigh.

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
I wish you the best of luck! and honestly, you know that you can always go back on Prev. if he requires it. You'll know the signs and symptoms so quickly that there's no harm, no foul I hope it's successful!!

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Just a thought for you - my hubby has had GERD for over 15 years (actually, NERD, but whatever). I started him on probiotics last year, and now only needs prilosec a few times a week instead of daily (often times plus antacids as well when he was only on the daily prilosec)

I get a full-spectrum probiotic, not just an OTC, but the cost isn't much difference. Good luck!

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
I think it's great that you're trying a med wean, but would it make sense to wait a couple more months until you get past the icky cold season? Just wouldn't want him to get derailed because he caught the flu, etc.

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
I was thinking the same as pp. We go to the doctor today and I am so scared that she is going to want me to start weaning. I am worried because there is so much stomach viruses and flu going around. I would like to keep her as is.

I am so happy that he is doing so well. That is such good news!

Check with your
doctor first!
