So scared. Pink tinged spit up
Hi, My son started spitting up a lot at 3 months. He never cried or choked but just spit up a lot. He never cried or arched his back or coughed or had trouble sleeping, only spit up a lot. the doc was only concerned bec he wasnt gaining as much weight as he was previiously gaining before we complained about the spit up. So we switched him to Alimentum Formula but that didnt help much. We went to a Pedia GI and he suggested Alimentum with Rice and Zantac. We avoided Zantac bec we felt if our son wadnt crying then he probably wasnt doing damage. he bagan to gain weight bec of the rice and we upped his ounces so we just dealt with the spitting up. Our son is now 5 1/2 months old and yesterday as I was dressing him lying down, he choked and couldnt breath. he had milk coming out of his nose and was hysterical bec he was scared and he cried for 10 minutes. i felt so bad and scared bec this never happened before. he finally calmed down and seemed ok but it was awful bec he couldnt breathe when he was choking. Then we put him to sleep and this am we noticed a bit of pink tinged spit up on his sheet. I freaked out bec we never saw this. now im thinking we should put him on meds bec he could be doing damage. Will the damage heal itself? COuld the pink be from irritated esophagus? Will it go away? I have both Zantac and Prevacid in y house bec my Pediatrician always told us Zantac stops working so he advised us to try Prevaicd instead. What is your advice? im so clueless. thought we were protecting him by not giving him meds and since he didnt seem in pain and never cried we thought hed be ok without meds but now if he has damage ill never forgive myself. Help C

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
First of all...relax. What happenned with your son was pretty typical of what happens in my house four or five times a day. It's scary as heck, but your son is OK. You might want to talk to your GI or pedi about trialing Prevacid. It's a proton pump inhibitor that blocks much of the acid production in the tummy. When your son is spitting up often, there's most likely a lot of acid coming up...even if he doesn't seem like he is in pain. What does it smell like? The acid smell is hard to miss. My son has been on Prev. for months and I missed ONE dose a few weeks ago and instead of just smelling like formuls...his vomit reeked of acid and bile. I'll never miss another dose. The pink tinge you saw probably was blood, but if it was a tiny bit and doesnt' occur again, don't sweat it (although you wnat to make SURE to tell the GI and pedi). It could be an indication of some irritation...it's not necessarily "damage" and it's not irreversible. Also, if he's a regular puker (spitter upper)...I would put a folded towel on one end of the changing table so he's not flat while you change him...I would also look at a wedge for his crib (costs about 15 bucks and is made of foam)...those are things that can A.) help him sleep more comfortably and B.) help avoid these incidents. As for it coming out the nose...that's pretty normal. when it's even remotely forceful it just shoots out of everywhere. Zack's comes out of the nose daily. Suction it out and he'll be fine. Also, one last thing...you metioned choking...make sure to mention that to the GI...most likely it was exactly that ...a choking incident because he was lying down...but it's very important that he's not regularly aspirating into his lungs. Does he have frequent "colds" or coughs...or like Zack..he always sounds "juicy"...kind of congested with a loose cough. Many parents use Zantac with Prevacid. I use only Prevacid and that works for us...but it takes some trial and error. Good luck!!!

thank you for posting. I feel like a nut im so scared and worried all of the time. to top it all off My son started rolling over on his tummy last night and literally sleeps face down into the mattress and doesnt turn over. Im worried he will suffocate. all that on top of this. No, he doesnt have any colds and doesnt cough or sound hjuicy, yet thank goodness but then again he never shot milk outta his nose either. Its all so scary and I cant wait for it to go away. Whats your trick for administering the prevacid tabs? DS wont drink water. UGH! C

when he was your son's age, I melted the solutab in a little water and sucked it into a syringe (the syringe that comes with Motrin is perfect) and squirted it into the inside of his cheek. Now I just melt it in a little water and he drinks it. He gags if I try to put the tab into his cheek and let it melt, but some kids handle that just fine! :)

Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
One thing about Prevacid...if your son vomits the granules, then they may look like dark purple spots on his sheets, clothes, etc. I don't think that has anything to do with the pink-tinged spit-up, but I just wanted to let you know so you don't freak out like I did when I saw the spots the first time - I thought it was dried blood.

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
do you use the solutabs? these can cause pink tinged spit up. when babies roll over themselves then they are past the SIDS risk..he might get upset though becuase they usually learn to roll over on their stomachs before they can get back to back. However he might prefer it! My son started sleeping on his tummy at 3 mo. and still does @ 17 mo. HTH
