This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
|Sometimes the prevacid/prilosec/zantax, etc... isn't enough. The Maalox or Mylanta is used for what's called "breakthrough pain," which is just the pain for when the meds wear off. Kids metabolize things very quickly, and there are times when, even though the meds are doing what they're supposed to be, it's just not quite enough. |
Many of us also used an H2 blocker in conjunction with the PPI or split the PPI dose into 2 times a day due to the rapid metabolism of the meds (if you're interested, you can look up the bioavailability of the meds.) The stomach and GI tract needs some acid to breakdown food, so the pumps don't all get shut off, thus there's still some acid in the system.

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
|My daughter takes Mylanta for pain. She is on Prevacid but can still get tummy aches.|
Just a note to make sure you are giving the prevacid on an empty stomach and 1/2 hour before a meal.
When Katie was little she was on Prevacid and Zantac (H2 blocker). HTH
