Vomiting again...HELPOur 10 week old daughter diagnosed with GERD at 8 weeks had been on 15mg Prevacid for 10 days and while she seems in general more comfortable she had started vomiting after her feedings again.
2 weeks ago we thickened her formula with Rice Cereal and that stopped the vomiting but not the arching of her back and constant thrashing. So the doctor added the Prevacid. Things were going ok until the last few days when she is now vomiting huge amounts of her feedings again. Why did this come back? Are there other meds that she should be on as well as the Prevacid? Any suggestions before I call the doctor?
Thanks to the moms out there. This is the best place for Reflux information!

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
|No ppi's or H2 blockers will stop the vomit. There are a few motility drugs out there (erythromycin and reglan) that help, but generally come with some side effects. The prevacid only helps with the acid production so the vomit isn't as painful or damaging. Unfortunately, most of the time with these kiddos we end up doing massive amounts of laundry. |
We hit the jackpot with Pepcid in the mornings and Prevacid in the evenings. Never hurts to ask if you can add an H@ blocker like pepcid or Axid to get her though, since babies metabolize everything so quickly. Maybe also ask about maalox or mylanta to help. I hope your MD gave you the prescribing advice, but if not: prevacid needs to be given on an empty stomach (at least 1 hour, preferably 2 after last feeding, and at LEAST 15 minutes before the next. Also, careful of the rice - many gerdlings don't do well on it. We did oatmeal cereal instead of the rice, though due to constipation issues. We went through waves of thinking the constant bathing in formula was finished, but would kick up again. Basically, the vomit should slow down after a few things occur - they start sitting upright more, they're muscle tone improves, the LES gets stronger, or surgery.
As long as the vomit doesn't seem to bother her and she's gaining well, it's just a laundry problem. If it smells acidic or she's screaming/thrashing/flailing, I'd talk to the doc.
It can take a while to really see the benefits of PPI's (took us about 8 weeks). HTH!

2 healthy daughters (knock wood) Cory (16), Kim (11) & Eric (4) diagnosed with e.e. (scoped 8/08), GERD & severe food/seasonal allergies, asthma. Cried non-stop first 17 mths. of life Found out he is allergic to cow's milk, soy, eggs, and peanuts. Takes Prevacid, Neocate One Plus & Flovent.
|Sorry if this is a repeat, but I always feel the need to ask if there is any way it could be allergy related. Vomiting and arching the back in pain can be signs of food allergy in infants. It may be that it is "only" reflux, but you may want to cut the rice cereal out & go to a hypoallergenic formula for a bit to see if there are any changes. Ellen|

Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
|The fact that things got a little better and then got a whole lot worse reminds me of my lo. They diagnosed her with MSPI and she was put on Neocate. Is there a possibility of allergy? Has that been addressed? Is she formula fed or bf? If bf you might want to try an elimination diet. If she is on formula you might want to cut out the rice cereal and try a different formula. Some kiddos do very well on Nutramigen. I hope you can get some help with this. -Amanda|

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
|My son is a super puker...I'm sorry you are dealing with this...but I wanted to let you know that we tried the rice cereal, too and it made the vomiting worse. You may want to try either oatmeal OR just forget it and try simply thick or thick it...both available online and in some pharmacies...many children do much better on it. We were getting almost our whole feeds back when we did the rice cereal. and it was SOOOO much more messy and gross and sticky! Ugh! Formula alone is bad enough.
Definitely see about allergies, too...but at the end of the day, my son is 16 months old and just pukes a lot. We're still waitign for him to gropw out of it. It's unpleasant and I hope you don;t have to deal with it long.||Check with your
