Mom to Matthew, 01/16/08, GERD baby, has been on Zantac since 2 mos. Aidan, his twin brother, no GERD. Max-ed out on Zantac at 1ml-3 times/day, and switched to Prevacid 15mg split tab 08/20/08. Switched again to 20mg Prilosec 09/18/08 due to Prevacid's restlessness/headache side effects. Reflux was out of control again and had to switch to 10mg Nexium 02/11/09. Good result so far.
Difficulty eating solid food
Hi everyone. This forum has been a wonderful resource and great comfort for me even though I haven't had time to keep up with checking in frequently. I pray every day that all our children would feel better and comfortable without pain. My poor little Matthew has been very irritable, cried and seemed to be in pain for the last 3 weeks. We took him to see his Pedi 3 weeks ago and the doctor also thought it could be teething. However his 2 upper teeth (his 5th and 6th teeth) came in yesterday but he remains irritable and inconsolable several times a day. He has been choking on solids, which he used to be able to chew very carefully before swallowing, and throwing up almost once a day now. His weight gain is fine so far. He eats pureed veggies, chicken and cheese, and mashed fruits. He used to be able to chew on well-cooked cut up pasta and fruits like papaya, pear. Today, he choked up on a teaspoon of mashed BANANA (first try of banana?? could it be allergic?) and threw up the whole thing during lunch, then threw up again at dinner. We were lucky enough to be able to re-feed him afterward. He sucks his thumb frequently and keeps chewing on toys. He didn't sleep well at night, woke up 1 or 2 times and very tired during the day. I have been giving him Tylenol for his teething but it doesn't seem to help much. I'm worried sick and will bring him to see the Pedi tomorrow and will see the GI as soon as we can get him in. Could this be an allergic reaction? or Eosinophilic Esophagitis? He sometimes coughs and makes sounds like something bothers his throat. He has been on Enfamil Gentlease and so far can eat most of veggie, dairy, meat, wheat, soy, etc. He had upper GI done at 7 months old and the result was normal. Should I push the doctors for more testings: endoscopy, biopsy of the esophagus...Thanks for reading and I appreciate any idea or thoughts you can give me.

Solid Food Dysphagia(difficulty swallowing) and food getting stuck in the esophagus are symptoms of Eosinophilic Esophagitis, along with stomach pain, vomiting, poor appetite, weird shallow coughing, sleeping problems,FTT.But reflux can also cause ALL these same issues, there is no way to know without a scope......Most kids with EE also have history of allergic disorders such as eczema,rashes/hives,asthma,allergic rhinitis, severe food allergy, enviromental allergy, sometimes anaphylactic reactions

Most kids with EE usually have very severe allergies ,lots of the time from birth, many of the food groups your son is eating makes EE kids sick for long periods of time, they USUALLY have to be on special prescription elemental formula. I wouldnt rush into thinking this is what he has since he has been eating well other than 3 weeks, a variety of foods with no allergic symptoms, this just started... But he DOES have some of the symptoms, so keep that in mind, he may need to be biopsied to be on the safe side if it continues for a while. It is certainly possible that he COULD have EE. I am one of those people that believe if reflux continues past one year, a scope should be done anyway to see what is going on.

So this is just starting? Has he been eating anyhing new the past few weeks that could possibly be making him sick? Teething can also cause gagging and vomiting, can set off sensory related gagging/choking and many here will tell you it definately flares reflux. It can continue even after the teeth have erupted because it is still sore, you know.Teething can also stimulate coughing because of the increased saliva production. My guess is that it is coming from this..

>p> You can give Zantac in addition to the Prilosec, also there is Carafate that mey help with the reflux.

Thank you so much Jessica for your valuable feedback. I'll definitely ask the doctor tomorrow about doing a scope. He has eaten bell pepper puree the 1st time for the past couple weeks with no adverse reaction for the first couple days. Then he got constipated with pasta so I switched to whole wheat bread for the last 2 days. He was fine yesterday but today was bad. I have been mixing wheat germ in his solids daily for several months and he has been fine with it. If his vomiting continues I will eliminate bell pepper and bread to see if it helps. I noticed he doesn't chew the food as well as he used to, may be because his gum hurts. I'll check with the dr about adding Zantac and Carafate. Thanks a lot again.
