constipation and reflux
I need to vent and ask if anyone else is has this issue? Both of my boys were born 38 weeks by c -- section. Neither one of them would have bowel movements on their own. I have to rectal stim my 5 week old 4 times a day or his reflux is so bad he screams. I am at my wits end. Both boys have been acid reflux babies. My oldest was a vomiter but the new baby is a swallower. He chokes a lot even with thickened feeds. We are doing Prevacid, Maalox before and after feeds, a low dose of Antibiotic, and increasing caloric intake. He was dx failure to thrive at 2 weeks old. We are not sleeping he is fussy from pain and very gassy. The bad part of this is I am a pediatric nurse and can't even fix my own child. Very DEPRESSING. Anyone out there with the same prbloms

Gail - mom to a six year old with reflux and an infant with reflux
My little boy had similar problems with constipation when he was an infant and his constipation made the reflux worse. We tried multiple laxatives (maltsupex, fletchers castoria, milk of magnesia, karo syrup) and formulas before finding a combination that worked. He ended up getting a blockage and was hospitalized. After being cleaned out via medication down his nose through a ng tube and several enemas, his formula was changed to alimentum thickend with oatmeal and twice daily doses of Miralax. The alimentum and Miralax together did the trick for us.

Debbie, Mom to:
Derek,10/29/02 GERD,Can't have any legumes(soy, being the worse), allergic to PN/Tree Nuts, struggled to gain weight for years, my "picky" eater,Takes Zegerid. Johnny, 12/05/99 GERD, managed by diet, allergic to cashews/pistachios.
My son is now 6, but has suffered with constipation since he was 1. The reflux meds will do it. When I take him off meds he gets regular right away, but then gets miserable with reflux. We do 1/2 a capful of Mirilax in his rice milk every day, or whatever drink he drinks. Debbie

My daughter has problems with constipation on a daily basis with her reflux as well. I also give her 1/2 cap of miralax in her first feed every morning. If I skip just one day, we all know..her vomiting gets much, much worse. Also, when we were in the hospital they gave my daughter Glycerin supposotories. Since then, the miralax seems to be working very well and all her Dr's say that miralax is the most gentle to use for infants. Hope this helps you! P.S....beware the first time you use it if he hasnt gone in a day or so, because you will have a mess on your hands! But that's a good thing!
