8 mo old with possible GERD on Prevacid
baby with constipation on Prevacid
I'm new here and was wondering if anyone's child has been constipated while using Prevacid. My doctor's say there is no correlation. Anyone else have this problem??

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
I know a lot of the kids on here are using Miralax for constipation. Never heard of a correlation but there could be for your little one.

Mary & Nicholas 7-17-03 (non-refluxer)allergies, asthma on Singulair and Flovent & Aidan 1-28-07(my refluxer)Nissen Fundoplication on June 20, 2008, FTT, MSPI, DGE, ear tubes, allergies and severe GERD now currently taking just Prevacid and drinking Elecare Vanilla 1+.
Most people have the opposite problem with Prevacid. Actually, it is used off-label to treat constipation. So it most likely isn't the prevacid causing the constipation. It could be that the constipation is making the reflux worse. Many refluxers use Mirilax for constipation I would ask your doctor about it. It could also be that your child actually has motility issues too. You may want to ask for testing like a delayed gastric emptying scan. Hope that helps.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Well, one of the side effects of most PPI's is a confusing constipation/diarrhea. Basically it can go either way, whichever your lo leans toward. My dd has functional constipation, and has since her second week. We've used lactulose with minimal results, just about every formula out there, every other day babylax, and finally had our best results with introduction of daily prunes and a magnesium supplement. We also use Mirilax PRN, though we've only done that for about 2 months.

I'd ask your MD about it, since constipation aggravates reflux sx, so it's worth putting in a call. Sometimes some gentle abdominal massage helps (start at baby's lower right side, massage up the right to the bottom of the ribs, across the abdomen, and down the left side). Many moms here have had good luck with Karo syrup or mineral oil, but I've never tried that and I'd ask the MD before you try anything really. Welcome - HTH!

Thank you for all the info. Constipation may not be exactly the right term for his problem, because nothing ever comes out hard. It just takes him 5 days to go! When he was 2 mo. old he would go poop 2-3 times a day. Then we put him on the Prevacid and no poop for 7 days. So our PCP took him off of it and put him back on Zantac. Now he is 8 mo and was going #2 every 2-3 days until the NP at the GI MD's office put him back on the Prevacid. Then no poop for 5 days. It is miserable. I will definately ask about the delayed gastric emptying scan. I've never heard of that but it sounds like it could give us some answers. Thanks again for all the info!

Sara, Mom to Isobel 10/01/08 Dx Silent reflux @ 6 wks. Prevacid 22.5mg split in 2 doses. Pepcid .5ml twice a day. Diagnostically confirmed milk protein, egg and cat allergy. Suspected corn, pea and squash allergy. Trialed Alimentum and Elecare without success, currently on Isomil Advance RTF with moderate success. Barium Swallow and UGI 3/08 Pondering a ph probe and endoscopy.
Hey, that's us too! My LO is 3 1/2 mos and while she used to go daily now it's 5 days and she's extremely uncomfortable with that length of time. Doc says normal for BF babe to go that long but not the discomfort. He didn't offer any suggestion other than milk of mag which has not worked for us. When the dear does go it's sticky, sticky, sticky though less mucousy now that I'm off the dairy and soy. Were you able to find out anything? Other suspected causes?

The only solution we had was to switch back to Zantac, but the pooping problem remained although it did get back to every 2-3 days between poops until we started back on the PRevacid. I have an Dr's appointment next week and am going to try to find out about any other causes. Have you tried giving your daughter gas medicine like Mylicon after every feeding. That has helped us eliminate some of the bloating and pressure for our LO.
