Cycling Periactin
Hi everyone I just wondered if anyone had any experience/words of advice regarding stopping Periactin.

My 1 yr old has taken it for a month. It was fantastic initially, he ate well and had a big weight gain. But it's effects wore off and we are now stopping it for a month.

He's been prescribed another anti-histamine, one that doesn't increase appetite. He has no allergies and the only reason he was on Periactin was for his appetite so should be take another anti-hist for a month, or should we have him on nothing for a month, before trying the Periactin again?? Thanks...

We haven't used it, not been allowed to actually even though I've asked many times....weird I know....

Most of the kids I know who have used it stay on for 3 weeks and come off for 1 week.

Thanks so much for your quick reply! After reading it i just left a message for my Paediatrician asking if we should be stopping Periactin for a week or a month, as he wasn't clear about it, I'm sort of guessing really! He'd just sent a prescription to me in the post for the new anti-hist with no info and hadn't discussed cycling Periactin with me - i only found out on this forum that that's what you do!! (no i can't get a new dr as i live in NZ and the choices are very limited!!) THANKS

what we do
we do 3-4 weeks on and 1 week off. we have had great results. my son was using another antihistamine during the week off, but he has not the last 2 times. we just use our judgement about using the other antihistamine during the week off. my pedi just wrote the script for every day that way we can stop it when it seems to be wearing off.
