New to forum - questions about Food aversion
Hi I am brand new to this site so I am looking for advice on children with food aversion. My first pediatrician did not diagnose my son with reflux. He never had too much spitting up, he just refused to eat solids - would only want formula. She told me he just hadn't found something he likes yet at 12 months!! Because of an intestinal infection (C. dif), he saw a Ped GI at 20 months and he noticed right away that he had GERD. We did Axid until 2.5 years then weaned him. We give him Pediasure as many times a day as he will drink it, but he still hates to eat. He cries everytime they go to cafeteria at daycare. He will occasioanlly try something but he's now three years old and still really only wants to drink Pediasure. I know that you parents out there have more serious problems but I am sure you might have advice. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! : )

Hi Michelle I have a son that has had a similar experience as your son is having-about being diagnosed late and having great difficulty with eating.I would encourage you to find an occupational therapist in your area that can help your son .Also, has he had an upper endoscopy?Ph study? A great resource that would have helped me when my son was a toddler is Jan Gambino's new book titled Reflux 101.You can email me directly at dsmcarr@sbcglobal.net

There is alot at that other thread too.

Hope it helps. in our experince a child will NOT eat well until all pain issues and GERD are compeltely under control. For us that meant extensive GI tract testing and lots and lots of meds.

I would contact Early Intervention in your area and get an eval and see if you can get some OT for feeding issues. I would make sure whoever does the feeding therapy in your home be trained in the area of feeding aversion kids.

Jedd still gets OT for his feedign issues. We are also gettign ready to have an eval at a feedign clinic (in patient) for Jedd to see if that will help further his oral motor food skills.

He is completely out of the norm as far as eating goes as well. He only drinks IF I squeeze and he eats only baby food stage 2. He is experimenting with "ral" foods but he gets tired and stops or it takes hm like an hour to get anything (small small amounts) down the hatch.

I totally feel your pain, I do. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Sorry it took a bit for me to get back to you....I'm having physical issues that I don't want to go into right now....:-(

Have you talked to the GI to find out if there is something more nutritionally complete to drink than Pediasure?

We keep trying to encourage Meggy to eat. She has no interest and automatically says "food owie" Sometimes though when offered, she will take the food and at least sample it. I know we waste tons of food, but we do offer her several things every day in hopes she will attempt eating again.

The other thing we learned is to make soups that are thin enough to come through her sippy cup. Sometimes she will drink soup that way. I think she will be big on gum when she is old enough as she loves chewing things, just not swallowing.

Have you tried to talk to your little one about why he doesn't want to eat. If his GERD is under control, and pain is limited, it may just takes tons upon tons of encouragement and him seeing that food doesn't hurt anymore.

Also, if the pain is well controlled at this time, u might talk to the GI about feeding therapy. We haven't tried it, but I hear some people have a great deal of success.

Is his oral aversion just to food, or to anything?

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
my son is 15 mo and almost 100% elecare formula fed. We just started feeding therapy this month and I'm excited about it. It's part of CA's early intervention. Zack only qualifies because of his feeding issues...developmentally he is on track for everything else. I'm saying this because it's worth a call for evaluation...if he is far behind his age level in feeding, he'll probably get free feeding therapy. It's so worth the phone call! Good luck. Every state has their own...Idon't know where you are! Is your boy a little one? Mine is...my peanut.

thanks for all the info!
After reading a whole lot the other night, I decided to give my son Axid again- he was weaned 6 mos ago but I think because he really has been eating next to nothing for the last month or so - I decided to try it. I sched. an appt at his GI for tomorrow and after one day back on the Axid- his appetite was improved last night. He basically normally just "gets by" on Pediasure and some small snack foods. He like dry small fingerfoods like goldfish, wheat thins, etc. I think that you are right- he can't get over this aversion until the pain is gone... We'll see what the GI says tomorrow.

thanks for the update Michelle.

I can take a while to see the affects after coming off a med. I pray you continue to see eating while on the meds. For us, we won't take Jedd OFF meds until he can tell us how he feels.

We have been able to wean him from a PPI to an H2 blocker full time. He takes Axid as well and it works pretty well. He needs to have his dosage messed with but I'll make it to the next Gi apt in a few weeks. We have ben seeing some fussing, burping, and gulping. Those are all signs he needs to be taking more.

BTW that's a very cute picture.

GI appt went well. Doc said he is perfect for height and weight. Said reflux could have come back on its own or came after a short bout with gastroenteritis (about a month ago.) Siad I did the right thing by giving him the axid so we are back at 5 mL 2x a day. Asked he about using feeding therapy and he said he believe children in Andrew's situation will improve by ages 4 to 6 with or without feeding therapy. He said he needs exposure to lots of different foods in a structured feeding time and that peer pressure is best for him (he is in daycare.) Also asked his opinion of using Periactin to stimulate Andrew's appetite and he said it would be an option if he was underweight, not developing at a normal rate. He also said that the Periactin would just increase his appetite for the Pediasure not to try new foods. He said that we are doing well that the resilts are good - just the procedure is "weird". All we can do is to continue to try the feeding schedule and variety of foods. I do think he may venture out more now that the acid is under control with the Axid. By the way- the pic is our New Orleans Snow Day! Andrew may never see snow again in New Orleans in his lifetime, so it was really special.
Check with your
doctor first!
