Melatonin drops/Liddell lab. oral spray SD
Do any of you have experience with Melatonin drops. With the horrific nights we have been having lately, I considered them. It seems like a good idea in rationale, but then I got home with them and the idea struck me-What if it relaxes her too much and she aspirates?

Am I being silly thinking this way?

How many of your refluxers have used Melatonin to help your little one's sleep through the night? Have you had success, or has it made matter worse?

Mayo Clinics thoughts on Melatonin

I know she needs rest to heal, but I don't want to risk SIDS for sure. Mayo had some things saying that kids with Neuro problems are more likely to have their seizure threshold lowered by melatonin supplementation.

Anyway, just wanted your thoughts on the matter. Not sure if I am just over thinking this.

Also, today at the health food store, I was introduced to Leddell laboratories Stomach distress spray. Supposed to be all natural. Have any of you heard of this or tried it?

Thanks, Engi

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
I'm not just saying this bc we're supposed to...check with your dr first. Honestly, those "all natural" and "herbal" things can be just as dangerous as prescription meds. Especially when you're dealing with children and possible drug interactions.

this is of course, just my opinion, but I wouldn't use them without talking to her ped or at least the nurse.

It has been suggested that melatonin may lower seizure threshold and increase the risk of seizure, particularly in children with severe neurologic disorders. However, multiple other studies actually report reduced incidence of seizure with regular melatonin use. This remains an area of controversy. Patients with seizure disorder taking melatonin should be monitored closely by a healthcare professional.

Yikes, Engi, I don't think I'd use them. This is the second time on that link that it mentioned possible increase in seizures.

I wouldn't do the melatonin...It's too risky with meggy, esp. without a diagnoses. Miss sticky hands is here, so I'll write more in a bit

Just wanted to add that if you want to boost her melatonin and reset her internal clock, a safe and effective method is to use broad spectrum lighting. Ok, I'll be back.

Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
Our doc told us not to use melatonin on her. I have used it for years for myself with great success. I don't know if it was her epilepsy, apnea or age. Either way they didn't recomend it.

Kat, we actually used gripe water for a while when Adriane was a baby. My friends had used it was amazing results. I talked to the doc before trying it and she actually got worse. Now I know that it is becuase of her allergies that she got worse on it. If you aren't dealing with allergies it is probably safe to use but you might want to just call your ped before hand.

Thank you,

We have had horrible experiences with Gripe water. I think mainly because Meggy strangles on water and thin liquids. She would cough and choke and cry for hours.

We also tried the colic calm tabs and teething tabs. None of it was suitable for Meggy. I think I do agree that given her health history, Melatonin may pose risk. I am glad I Had the after thoughts.

Thank you for all your responses and encouragement.

Engi, I think we all know from experience that sometimes we get so sleep deprived, that we think we will try anything to get some sleep. Then when we slow down and think about it, we realize that our idea might not be so great after all. I've been through that many many times.

That's what makes this place so wonderful! We're all moms, we're honest with each other, we're not doctors that will just make each other feel dumb or inferior...we've all been there. Hugs!

Check with your
doctor first!
